Description:
New York: Dodd, Mead & Company, 1885. Map/Print. Fine. No Binding. First published in Germany in 1884, the English translation followed in 1885. The folio represented a small sample of the thousands of West-Coast Native artifacts shipped to the Berlin Museum commencing in 1882. The full colour original lithographs were produced in Berlin by the Museum. The productions were considered the ultimate in reproduction colour and the folio itself became very sought after. Unfortunately for the collector, it was a limited edition and therefore, very expensive for the period. The prints from this folio are considered to be extremely rare. A total of only 13 plates were issued, 5 of which are in original full colour. Acid free matboard, ready for framing..

Gillray, James (1757-1815), English Caricaturist, one of the fathers of political cartooning. His satirical caricatures followed in the tradition of William Hogarth but were more overtly political than Hogarth's generalized social commentary. His cartoons-which lampooned the court, the government, and in particular the royal family-were biting, witty, and often outrageous. Characterized by pitiless exaggeration of the personalities and physical features of their subjects, they set the style for later English political cartooning..
