Oblong large 4to (12 1/2 x 9 1/2"), 40p., pictorial boards, edges and spine ends worn, faint margin stain and finger soil on some pages, really a VG+ copy. Poems for little children are printed in a range of colors and in a variety of fonts. Featuring illustrations by American artist Walter Satterlee: text pages are illustrated in one color, and there are 16 lovely full page chromolithographs of little children, humanized flowers, some fairies and more. There are pictorial endpapers with a fairy theme as well. Printed on very thick high quality paper and with magnificent color pictorial covers. This is one of the nicest American chromolithographed books for children, rare in the first edition.

The first illustration is a cricket gamer and others show children at various playtime activities including Playing Indians, Toy Soldiers, At the Seaside plus there are some clever humanized animals. Inside each cover is an alphabet. This is a great copy.

First edition (second edition is stated and lists the author as Major, not Captain). Printed on one side of the paper, every letter is represented by a full page poem dealing with various military themes and ethnic groups, printed in a large font. Accompanying the verses are fine full page chromolithographs printed by Kronheim. "D" is for Dragoon, " "I is for Indian Horseman, "Z" is for Zoave. This is a companion to Aunt Louisa's picture books for children. First editions are rare and this is a nice copy.

Illustrated with 4 fabulous pop-up pages, each with a different blimp or balloon that pops-up as the page is turned: airship flies over a polar bear in the frozen north, airship flies over soldiers in the battlefield firing a gun, airship flies over a garden party with festive balloons, airship hovers over the Statue Of Liberty in New York Harbor. The text is in verse and text pages are illustrated in brown. Rarely found in such nice intact condition.

The contents are poems featuring women by notables of the era: Frederick Locker, Austin Dobson, Walter Learned. Although McVickar illustrated many books, little is known about him personally.

The story is cleverly told in verse. There are 12 fanciful and outstanding full page chromolithographs plus numerous 2-color text illustrations by ALAN WRIGHT (Anne Anderson's husband). A wonderful picture book, quite scarce.

This is a wonderful VICTORIAN TRANSFORMATION BOOK with 8 fine chromolithographed tab-operated plates. When the reader pulls the tab, the slatted illustration dissolves to reveal another picture below (done by an un-named artist). All except one involve little children at play or with pets and one has a marvelous humanized stork that turns into a humanized puffin. Each plate faces a page of verse with charming illustrations in line. See Peeps Into Nisterland p. 313.
