This is a panorama (bound accordion style) of 12 mounted, wonderful color woodblock prints of children playing a variety of games with different toys, with an additional full page color woodblock of a variety of toys. The quality of the printing was important to the publisher and he succeeded in producing color illustrations that appear to be hand colored. Laid-in is a 4 page folder with short descriptions of the games and toys, and how they are played. Includes Battledore and Shuttlecock, Playing With Tops, a form of Backgammon, Playing at War, Hunting Grasshoppers, Making Snow Men and more.

Chicago: Rand McNally (1915). 6 1/2 x 8 3/4"vo, boards, pictorial paste-on, 115p., near Fine in dust wrapper. 1st edition. The story is little Esther's involved fantasy trip to Toyland ruled by King Noah. She escapes with the help of humanized flowers and the rain witch. Illustrated by Ross with 24 fabulous full page color illustrations plus numerous smaller color illustrations and wonderfully detailed black & whites all throughout the text. A very scarce book by Ross who is perhaps best known for his humanized flowers in his Volland work with Elizabeth Gordon. M.T. Ross nicknamed "Penny", was an illustrator and comic artist in the early twentieth century. He lived in Oak Park, Illinois and had his studio in downtown Chicago. He was one of the first co-workers of Walt Disney, as well as a close friend of R.F. Outcault, with whom he developed 'Buster Brown'. M.T. "Penny" Ross moved to Southern California in 1926 to work for RKO and other studios as a set designer. This is a fantastic copy, rare in the dust wrapper.

BOY SCOUTS IN CAMP

SCOUTING. BOY SCOUTS IN CAMP. NY: McLoughlin Bros., no date, circa 1915. Housed in the original box is a COMPLETE SET OF 22 BOY SCOUT FIGURES. The box measures 16 1/2 x 8 3/4" with a color plate mounted on the cover. The flaps have been nicely reinforced and the box is in VG+ condition. The scouting figures are mounted on heavy card and set into wooden bases. There is also a folding tent labeled "Boy Scouts Company A" with an American flag attached. The scouts are in two scouting patrols each with a leader and seven scouts plus a fife and rum corps with 4 drummers and 2 pipers. All pieces are complete and unbroken. The Boy Scouts of America was founded in 1910 and this is an early and wonderful scouting toy not often found complete in such nice condition.

Folded accordion style, there 12 large and very fine color woodblock illustrations of a variety of toys from tops and dolls to flower carts. Each color page faces a full page illustrated in line. The images are large and striking.

There is an 8 page instructional booklet to be used as a guide to construct a variety of toys from nearly 50 leaves of color lithographed pages. The child can make: a Magician with his tricks, an Aquarium (with translucent paper giving the illusion of water), the Toy Soldiers of Zim Bum Bum, an Automaton, a Carousel, Birds in the sky, a Trip to the Moon, a Ballerina, a Convent, a Game of Horses and Keys to the Treasury. There are also several thick card pages used as bases. Edina Altara was a self taught artist who became a popular Italian illustrator. This is a lavish children's book by any standard but considering the publication year of 1945, it is quite remarkable.
