First edition, illustrated by Bilibin with 5 magnificent full page and several smaller color lithographs. A Russian folk tale: "The motifs of Old Russia and exotic India are whimsically interwoven here: the capital city of the fairy-land is surrounded by walls similar to those round the Solovetsky monastery in the White Sea." (Golynets p.10). Due to its large format and delicate binding, this is extremely difficult to find in such nice condition.

Humanized forest denizens and the bear are illustrated by K[onstantin] Rotov with fantastic chromolithographs on every page. Kornilov was a noted Russian poet who died in 1935, He was "out of favor" with the government but his work is now recognized and there is even a museum dedicated to him.

Chizh was the most important magazine for younger Russian children, Along with Ezh for older children, the content featured stories and art by the leading authors and illustrators of the day. There were also activity pages and cut-out novelties. The issues of Chizh measure 7 1/2 x 9 1/2" and average 20 pages per issue. Except for a few neat mends on one issue they are in great condition. Includes: 1936 Number 1, 1937 Number 10, 1939 Number 5, 1940 Number 4 and 1940 Number 6. Murzilka measures 9 x 11 3/4" and includes No. 1 1936 and Number 3 1940, both with similar content to Chizh.
