FIVE CHINESE BROTHERS ORIGINAL ART

By BISHOP, CLAIRE HUCHET

WIESE, KURT. (WIESE,KURT)illus. THE FIVE CHINESE BROTHERS ORIGINAL ART written by Claire Huchet Bishop. Offered here are 6 finished ink drawings and 2 pages of pencil studies for the filmstrip version of The Five Chinese Brothers prepared for Weston Woods in 1958. The images measure 10" wide x 7" high done on larger art paper. 5 of the 6 are signed by Wiese. There are page notations under the pictures that don't correspond to the book pages and the images are similar but different from the originals. The book tells the story about 5 Chinese brothers who look identical but each has a super power he can use when in trouble. Three of the drawings are of Brother Number One who could swallow the ocean and then collect items from the ocean floor. Another picture shows three men standing in a row boat after the Third Chinese Brother was thrown overboard. Two pictures show men standing around a hot oven where the Fourth Chinese Brother was supposedly burning. The next illustration shows him happily opening the doors and emerging unscathed from the oven. The 2 paper sheets contain pencil studies of little Chinese Boys. The story of the Five Chinese Brothers is based on a Chinese legend from the Ming Dynasty. However this version stirred controversy by depicting the stereotypes that all Asians look the same and have yellow skin. Wiese was a prolific illustrator including Bambi, Freddy the Pigs series, The Story About Ping and his You Can Write Chinese which was a Caldecott Honor. The Five Chinese Brothers was extremely popular when it was published by Coward McCann and today first editions in dust wrappers are amongst the rarest of the classics. Includes a later printing of the book. The provenance is the estate of Morton Schindel, the producer of the filmstrip.

ORIGINAL ART: ANOTHER OUTLINE, OR THE STRANGE STORY OF DENNIS THE O'CE

By SMITH, E.BOYD

SMITH, E.BOYD. SMITH,E.BOYD. ORIGINAL ART: ANOTHER OUTLINE, OR THE STRANGE STORY OF DENNIS THE O'GEOGHEGAN. Offered here is an original watercolor done by Smith for an unpublished book. Done in the same size and format of his Early Life of Mr. Man, circa 1910. It measures 11 1/2" wide by 9 3/4" high and is matted with the the visible image measuring 10" x 8 1/2". The image is a tongue in cheek look at evolution with a simian (gorilla) portrait side by side with a human portrait whose face shows that we haven't evolved too much from the monkeys. O'Geoghegan is so clearly an Irish name that this could be Smith's insult, hopefully with good humor rather than with malice. Both portraits are embedded in the evolutionary tree. Below this are various prehistoric animals including dinosaurs and a mastodon. Typical of Smith's work but with more of an edge resulting in a piece that is fun to look at. Smith has a prominent place in the history of American picture books. In the Brooklyn Public Library's on-line exhibit they note that with his first 2 picture books "it immediately established him, along side Howard Pyle and Jessie Willcox Smith as one of America's leading illustrators for the young.
