NY: Covici Friede 1937. 4to (7 x 10 1/8"), flexible tan pictorial cloth, no glassine, spine and rear edge faded, mark at finger slot level corresponding with the finger hole cut out on slipcase for book removal, owner bookplate tipped onto free endpaper purportedly belonging to a Covici Friede associate. Housed in the publisher's slip case with the limitation LETTER on the spine of the case. (The edge of case stained in two areas, else tight and VG) 1st edition. LIMITED TO 699 NUMBERED COPIES SIGNED BY STEINBECK, THIS IS A SCARCE "LETTERED" EDITION, presumably for private distribution to friends. In addition to being lettered not numbered, this is printed on Marais hand made paper (watermarked) while the numbered copies are on La Garde paper. The limited edition originally sold for $10.00 - a large sum for the time, but it sold out. The story features young Jody Tiflin and his life on his father's northern California ranch. The first edition has no illustrations; an illustrated expanded edition came out in 1945. This "lettered" limited edition is quite scarce and would make a special addition to any book collection.

First published in 1937 with no illustrations and with 3 stories. This is the 1st illustrated edition, with an additional story not in the 1937 edition. THIS COPY IS INSCRIBED BY STEINBECK ON THE TITLE PAGE: "FOR JOYCE WITH LOVE / [signed] JOHN STEINBECK / HORSES AREN'T MUCH FOR SMARTNESS - BUT THEY'RE NICE. MAYBE THAT'S WHY. ALSO SIGNED "JOHN STEINBECK" ON THE FLYLEAF. The book belonged to Jules and Joyce (Gates) Buck with their bookplate laid in. Joyce was the wife of American film producer Jules Buck who had collaborated with Steinbeck on the screenplay for Elia Kazan's "Vivia Zapata." Illustrated with wonderful full page and smaller color lithographs as well as pictorial endpapers by Wesley Dennis (printed by Kipe). Inscribed trade editions are rare, this signed, inscribed association copy is extra special.

The first edition was published in Holland with calligraphic text. This edition has typeset text in a large font and is probably the first edition printed in America. The charming story was inspired by actual horses that lived next to Worm. Featuring lively, bright color illustrations on every page by Worm, a Dutch illustrator, painter and book binding designer. Sold with this are 9 LETTERS FROM WORM TO A TEACHER IN CALIFORNIA WHO EACH YEAR HAD HER CLASS DRAW PICTURES ABOUT THE BOOK THAT SHE THEN SENT TO WORM. The correspondence begins in 1959 and ends in 1963. Four letters are hand written, 5 are typed and all are very long; all but 2 are double sided on 8 1/2 x 11" paper. The tone is chatty, much is written about his work, his new projects, his difficulties with his publisher, etc. He must have been a special man to take the time to write such detailed letters over the years. A wonderful offering.

ABC, ALPHABET. This is a curious book with no publication information anywhere. The book measures 4 1/2 x 7", cloth, inconspicuous joint repairs and few pages with old mends neatly done else VG+. Circa 1850-60, printed on one side of the paper only and illustrated with woodcuts on every page. The first part of the book has 2 pictorial alphabets. The first has 8 words for each letter with 3 pictures per page (J is for Jew). The second is an alphabet in rhyme, mainly of names, with 2 illustrations per page. They are followed by a number of sections each one with a half page illustration. Two of these sections deal with more than 20 sports and pasttimes including Football, Hockey, Tennis, Cricket, Shuttlecock, Trap Bat and Ball and more. There is the story of a horse told from the horse's point of view. He has a series of miserable owners, is abused and finally finds a master that appreciates him. Other stories are 12 page tributes to relatives in verse like My Mother, My Father, My Grandmother, My Grandfather, My Aunt, My Brother. The illustrations are well printed and this is an interesting mid 19th century children's book.
