THIS COPY IS INSCRIBED TO CRAWHALL FROM THE PUBLISHER: "JOSEPH CRAWHALL / WITH THE COMPLIMENTS OF THE PUBLISHER / FIELD & TUER 26/10/83." On the verso of the title page is the Limited Edition statement: As the illustrations herein are all hand colored the issue is necessarily limited - Joseph Crawhall". The book contains 8 chapbooks, each approximately 30 pages, with separate covers and pagination and printed on various colored rough textured papers. Illustrated by Crawhall with his wonderful and characteristic boldly outlined woodcuts, hand colored. It includes: The Babes in the Wood, Jemmy & Nancy of Yarmouth, I Know What I Know, Blew-cap for Me, John & Joan, George Barnewel, The Barkshire Lady's Garland and The Taming of the Shrew. Crawhall was born in Newcastle in 1821 and wrote and/or illustrated 17 books before he died in London in 1896. House: Dict. of 19th Century Illustrators notes: "Crawhall enjoyed the spirit of book making and began to assemble material from various sources, writing, illustrating and putting the book together himself. ... Crawhall attempted to bring back the personality to books, dead since industrialisation".

Folio (10 1/2 x 14"), cloth backed pictorial boards, except for a very few tiny margin mends and margin finger soil this is a bright near Fine copy. Featuring 25 fantastic full page color lithographed plates that appear to be heightened with hand coloring (pochoirs). The text in verse is on the bottom margin of each page. Several of the characters pictured are similar to those in some of his moveable books and on the last page Meggendorfer has pictured his self portrait. This is a rare and fantastic German picture book.

Illustrated with 8 very fine hand-colored cuts plus hand-colored cover (cover erroneously calls for 10 coloured pictures but the pagination is continuous including the pictures and nothing is missing). This is a charming toy book with unusually nice hand-coloring.

The famous children's rhyme about an old woman finding a silver penny features 14 very fine half page hand colored woodcuts. Printed by Samuel Bentley on one side of the paper. The publishing firm of John Harris was absorbed by Grant and Griffith in 1843 and this is an early title of that imprint, still maintaining the Harris page of ads.

London: Griffith and Farran 1859. 4to (7 1/2 x 9 1/2"), salmon colored pictorial boards, [21]p. + [1]p. ad, respined with matching paper, some cover soil else remarkably tight and clean. 1st edition. The story originated as a tale that Hood told to his children. After he died his son Tom wrote down the story and illustrated it (his original manuscript is at the Huntington Library). Printed on one side of the paper only, each leaf features a fine HAND-COLORED illustration showing the ultimately sad tale of this dandified pig. The preface is by Frances Freeling Broderip, the author's daughter and a children's writer as well. First editions in such nice condition are rare. Sold with a 1969 facsimile of the original manuscript.

The game is housed in the original gilt decorative box 8" wide by 7" high and 1" thick and has a very fine hand colored lithograph on the cover. Except for a slight bit of rubbing this is in Fine condition. Housed inside is (a) a large folding game board 24 x 20" mounted on cloth featuring hand-colored lithographs, (b) instructions printed on both sides of a sheet of blue paper, (c) printed railway tickets in 2 colors (Fahrkarte fur dis Nord-Bahn and Fahrkarte fur dis Sud-Bahn), (d) 2 wooden dice with paper inserts illustrated with images of locomotives and (e) 2 wooden pawns with paper inserts with images of locomotives. The game board has a total of 52 squares for 2 independent train routes: from Wien North Station to Prague and from Wien South Station to Graz. The 4 stations are represented with large hand-colored views of the stations. The 48 smaller squares depict a variety of obstacles the train might encounter: landslides, bridges collapse, explosions, derailments,etc. There are also views of the intermediate stations the trains may stop at: Lundenburg, the German name of the Czech city of Breclav; Brunn, the German name for the Czech city of Brno; Modling and Baden. Recently exhibited in Vienna at the Wien Museum's "Spiel der Stadt", this is a rare game in incredible condition.

Consisting of one large hand-colored sheet 20 x 26" cut into sections, mounted on linen and folded together with one instruction booklet, both housed in a gilt stamped slipcase, all in fine condition. The handsome HAND-COLORED lithographed map / game board replaces the conventional map with a pictorial representation of the counties - their produce and commerce as well as important topographical areas. The game begins at the mouth of the Thames and ends 151 stops later at the City of London. See Whitehouse 14 whose copy is contained in folding boards. The 20 page booklet has the rules of the game and an explanation of the various landmarks and counties. This game is important for its innovative pictorial representation of the counties. This is extremely attractive and is in unusually fine condition.
