(box soiled and rubbed. 1st edition. 16 fairy tales were selected as childhood favorites by a variety of eminent people (Samuel Clemens, Henry James, Howard Pyle etc.) and illustrated by Newell with 16 wonderful tinted plates. Marvelous pictorial borders are on every page by Frances Bennett. This is a companion to Newell's Alice, Snark and Looking Glass, rare in the dust wrapper and box.

Minor expert repair to back flap, else clean, fine and COMPLETE WITH 16 DOLL FIGURES! Featuring 4 nursery tales: Cinderella; Red Riding Hood; Sleeping Beauty and Puss In Boots. Each of the panels is beautifully illustrated with chromolithographs. There are numbered slats into which the reader inserts the corresponding doll to complete the scene. Quite scarce. See Haining: Moveable Books p. 86-87 for text and photos and Whitton: Raphael Tuck p.106. This is a particularly nice copy.

Oblong folio (13 x 11"). pictorial wraps, some light cover soil else near fine, complete and unused. Everything a child would need to put on his/her own shadow theater is included here. There are 8 sheets of blue cardboard that contain 40 cut-outs of figures and costumes to be mounted on handles. The cover is also used for a backdrop and an additional piece is in the rear of the book. The presentations consist of two Perrault fairy tales: Cendrillon (Cinderella) and La Belle au Bois (Sleeping Beauty). Decorations and costumes are by Lalouve whose real name was Kate Wolff. Wolff was a Jewish artist forced to leave Germany in 1933. She came to Paris and began to work for Pere Castor, hiding her Jewish origins and changing her name to Lalouve, This is the second Shadow Theater published by Pere Castor. A rare and wonderful Pere Castor item.
