Minor expert repair to back flap, else clean, fine and COMPLETE WITH 16 DOLL FIGURES! Featuring 4 nursery tales: Cinderella; Red Riding Hood; Sleeping Beauty and Puss In Boots. Each of the panels is beautifully illustrated with chromolithographs. There are numbered slats into which the reader inserts the corresponding doll to complete the scene. Quite scarce. See Haining: Moveable Books p. 86-87 for text and photos and Whitton: Raphael Tuck p.106. This is a particularly nice copy.

lalouve. FAIRY TALE THEATER. (SHADOW) THEATRE D'OMBRES DU PERE CASTOR - NOUVEAU PROGRAMME Decors et costumes de Lalouve. Paris: Flammarion 1936. Oblong folio (13 x 11"). pictorial wraps, some light cover soil else near fine, complete and unused. Everything a child would need to put on his/her own shadow theater is included here. There are 8 sheets of blue cardboard that contain 40 cut-outs of figures and costumes to be mounted on handles. The cover is also used for a backdrop and an additional piece is in the rear of the book. The presentations consist of two Perrault fairy tales: Cendrillon (Cinderella) and La Belle au Bois (Sleeping Beauty). Decorations and costumes are by Lalouve whose real name was Kate Wolff. Wolff was a Jewish artist forced to leave Germany in 1933. She came to Paris and began to work for Pere Castor, hiding her Jewish origins and changing her name to Lalouve, This is the second Shadow Theater published by Pere Castor. A rare and wonderful Pere Castor item.

Paris: Boussod, Valadon 1886-1887. 2 Folio volumes (12 1/4 x 15 1/4"), top edges gilt, printed on heavy wove velin on one side of the paper only with each page individually hinged into the binding. Bound in beautiful contemporary full morocco with extensive gilt tooling, spines in compartments with raised bands, gilt dentelles, silk doublures and endleaves (instead of paste-down and free endpapers), housed in custom marbled slipcases. Joint of Barbe Bleu lightly worn and slipcases strengthened on edges else Fine condition. These 4 fairy tales by Perrault are illustrated by EDOUARD DE BEAUMONT with 73 magnificent aquarelles, color photogravure illustrations printed integrally with the text. The quality of the color printing is so superb that it appears to be hand-done. De Beaumont was a noted Belle Epoch artist who founded the Societe des Aquarellistes (See: Dictionnaire des illustrateurs p.103, Ray: Art of the French Illustrated Book for other mention of De Beaumont and full page color illus. in Quayle's Collector's Book of Children's Books p.97). Simply an exquisite book of fairy tales.

Illustrated with bold colors and broad strokes by David Brett, often described as a Denslow imitator. Printed on textured paper, the pages are artfully arranged with text integrated into the illustrations. There are full page color illustrations as well. A great fairy tale picture book.

Inside each cover is the text of each story. There are 4 full page color art nouveau illustrations - each with 3 postcards. Opposite each illustrated page of postcards is the same illustration in line designed to be painted by the child. The illustrator isn't named but there are initials W inside and M in the corner of the images. The art is quite lovely and it is amazing that this survived in unused condition.
