First edition of this famous book of fairy tales by Wilde, printed in an edition of 1000 copies on high quality paper. Magnificently illustrated by CHARLES RICKETTS with cover, title page, endpaper designs and with textual ornaments representing some of his finest work. Also illustrated by Ricketts' housemate & partner in the Vale Press, CHARLES SHANNON with 4 plates. Due to damage of the printing plates, the plates in all copies of this book appear faded (see Muir: Victorian Illus. Books p.191). This is an important children's book by an interesting trio. Featuring 6 magnificent full page color illustrations by Ilse Breit in the style of the Wiener Werkstatte, this being WIENER JUGENDKUNST-BILDERBUCHER No. 3. Breit was a student of Franz Cizek, a controversial figure in art education whose arts and crafts style school in Vienna produced illustrators of several striking picture books. He wrote the introduction to the book.

Inside each cover is the text of each story. There are 4 full page color art nouveau illustrations - each with 3 postcards. Opposite each illustrated page of postcards is the same illustration in line designed to be painted by the child. The illustrator isn't named but there are initials W inside and M in the corner of the images. The art is quite lovely and it is amazing that this survived in unused condition.

ART NOUVEAU. ADVERTISING MIRROR. This is an hand-mirror measuring 11" high. French, ca 1905. Produced for Leon Ducuing, specilaite de Blouses pour Maquignons. The handle of the mirror is a woman in a gown standing on a globe. In her uplifted arms is a round art nouveau decorative border within which is the mirror. Quite lovely and in fine condition.
