London: Hodder & Stoughton, no date, circa 1912. 4to (8 3/4 x 11"), brown cloth with extensive gilt pictorial cover, publisher has printed the title twice on the title page and a very few light scattered spots else Very Fine IN PUBLISHER'S BOX WITH COLOR PLATE ON COVER (box flaps repaired with other wear). 1st edition. Printed on one side of the page, this is Illustrated by Bull with 10 tipped-in full page color plates with guards and 19 mounted half page plates. There are dozens of lovely blue illustrations throughout including on the text pages. This is a beautiful version of these classic tales, rare in the box.

STERRETT. (STERRETT,VIRGINIA)illus. ARABIAN NIGHTS edited by Hildegarde Hawthorne. Philadelphia: Penn Publishing Co. (1928). Large thick 4to (9 1/4 x 11 1/4"), 308p.,blue gilt cloth, pictorial paste-on, spine lettering dulled and slight wear to spine ends else VG+. 1st edition. Illustrated by Sterrett in a style similar to Nielsen with cover plate, pictorial endpapers and title page, 16 magnificent color plates and 20 partial page black and whites. Arabian Nights proved to be Sterrett's last book, done while she was in a sanitarium for her tuberculosis. Although she recovered from this bout, it recurred and she died in 1931 at the age of 31. Sterrett's style is well suited to the stories of the Arabian Nights and this is a nice copy.

Thick 4to (8 X 10 1/4"), blue gilt cloth, pictorial paste-on, 297p., offsetting on front endpapers and small corner of one tissue guard torn else near Fine. 1st American edition of this masterful work, illustrated by Detmold with 12 incredibly beautiful mounted color plates with tissue guards plus pictorial title page and black and whites in-text. It is interesting to note that the black and white illustrations do not appear in the U.K. edition.

Thick 4to (7 3/4 x 10"), blue gilt decorative cloth, pictorial paste-on, 298p. although not a first edition it is a FINE COPY IN THE RARE ORIGINAL DUST WRAPPER (dw with a few archival mends on verso). Illustrated by Bull with 10 magnificent, rich, tipped in color plates on heavy stock (with tissue guards) plus 98 black and whites as well as head-pieces. LAID IN IS AN ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR SIGNED BY BULL PLUS A 2-PAGE HANDWRITTEN LETTER INCORPORATING 3 PEN AND INK DRAWINGS. The watercolor depicts a Turkish looking man in a turban, clothed like a character from the Arabian Nights. The image measures 2" wide x 5 1/8" high on board 5 x 6 1/2", signed "With my love from Rene Bull." There is also a pencil drawing of an Arab man and a dog which has "5 minute sketch - Jack Hassall" on the verso. The chatty letter was written to Jack [John Hassall] who was just home from a trip apparently to Australia with his wife Olivia (Bull writes " I hope you have brought back a boomerang"). It is 2 pages written on both sides of one piece of paper. Incorporated into the letter are 3 finished ink drawings of stereotypical Black natives, one playing a drum with bones and the other two dancing. This is a super item and a beautiful version of these tales (See Peppin: Fantasy p. 116-17).

Thick large 4to (9 1/2 x 11 1/2"), full vellum with elaborate gilt decorations on cover and spine, top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed, the most minimal cover soil, a Fine copy with ties renewed. 1st edition, LIMITED TO 500 NUMBERED COPIES SIGNED BY DULAC (this #19). A most sumptuous and beautiful book, illustrated by Dulac with 23 tipped- in color plates on gilt decorated mounts with lettered guards and with gilt decorations and borders on text pages. This is an outstanding copy of one of Dulac's most lovely and desired books. Very scarce in the limited edition.
