The text is in verse accompanied by fantastic illustrations by BART (Fred R. Bartholomew) in bright colors in a style reminiscent of Denslow's (including unbelievable pictorial endpapers). One of the wonderful American picture books produced at the turn of the last century. Very scarce.

ORIGINAL ART: THE PEARL AND THE PUMPKIN

DENSLOW, W.W.. DENSLOW,W.W.. ORIGINAL ART: THE CORN DODGER FROM "THE PEARL AND THE PUMPKIN". Offered here is the original pen and ink drawing by Denslow that appears as a chapter heading for Chapter 6 of The Pearl and the Pumpkin by Paul West, published in 1904 by Dillingham. The original is done on art paper measuring 9 1/4" wide x 12" high and is nicely framed to 14 x 16 1/2". There are pencilled production notes in margins and the piece is in Fine condition, signed by Denslow including his characteristic sea-horse. The image is the Corn Dodger, a humanized ear of corn that is wearing a crown and holding a strand of corn silk in his hand. It is much larger than it appears in the book and is a wonderful, fanciful image.

This is a fabulous book about a family of humanized mushroom fairies that live in a house made from a mushroom, and their encounters with their enemies the Toadstool Imps. Printed on coated paper, every page of text is illustrated with a pictorial border and there are 12 fabulous chromolithographed plates. Adah Sutton was the wife of Arthur Saalfield, the publisher of this and hundred's of other children's books. This is a nice copy of a rare American picture book.
