Several full page detailed ads of brake devices (some in color), Besides the many articles on air brakes, there are dozens of technical articles on other equipment (including an electric power that might surpass steam). The article on "fireman and firing" p. 202-203 shows the danger as coal supplies dwindle. There is an article on immigration which is says has brought in "a large population of untrained and unadapted races of south and east Europe...they have lowered the wage standard of the American population." There is a long article "War Prices in the United States" which accuses the monopolies of big business of having obscene profits. The chart of pages 509-510 lists death and disability claims. The author who also has written extensively on Illinois railroads had made this his final and most complete study of the Chicago Surface Lines. Not only is it the finest pictorial record with texts explaining each one, but the author has concentrated on equipment and routings. Nearly 600 black & white photographs, covers the period 1837-1947. Photos of all car types, rosters, along with a history of all street cars and bus lines. This was when Chicago had the world's largest street railway. Bound in red cloth lettered in gilt, near fine in near fine unclipped pictorial dust jacket.

The only historical data to e found in this publication will be that which is necessary for purposes of clarification, in the photo captions. Instead, this book has but one purpose...to analyze, pictorially, the motive power in service on the division during the final quarter century or so of steam operation. Bound in pictorial paper covered boards with a black and white view of a train on the George Town loop bridge, ruled in red. A very good copy lightly rubbed around the edges.

The Pennsylvania Railroad made an extraordinary effort in corporate image making to produce editions both in English and Spanish. Maps included are: Pennsylvania RR, New York to Chicago: (2) New York Harbor; (3) New York City; (4) Philadelphia (5) Washington (6) Chicago; and (7) Chicago, Business District. This copy was bound in Malaga, Spain for the W.C. Bevan & Company which was one of the largest U.S. companies in Spain. Bound in brown cloth, spine lettering gilt, light brown endpapers. A very good copy with nice maps.

One of the most colorful yet neglected American transportation history has been re-created in this definitive history of the electric inter-urbans. From their early construction in the early 1900's to their sharp decline after World War II as the family automobile became ubiquitous. Part I describes the construction, technology and how passenger and freight traffic led to the expansion of American in the first half of the 20th Century.
