Description:
Lewis Hatch was a respected bookseller all through the 1920's into the 1930's. Here he addresses a prospective customer March 12, 1930. Dear Mrs. Murphy "Here is a spotless copy of the Kelmscott "Love is Enough" in the original box. As this is 33 years old (1897) I doubt if another copy as fine as this exists. The price is $100. Very truly yrs, Lewis Hatch. A very nice letter on his stationary with his location having changed from 443 East 57th St to 34 East 61st, New York. Small closed tear at bottom of letter else near fine. Of course copies of the Kelmscott at auction in recent years have been in the $3-5,000 range especially fine with the original box.

Description:
Each of the four original postcards were never mailed which because of their size (10 3/4" x 3 1/2") would not have survived postal handling. The Harwood Photo Service was in Medford, Oregon in 1925 and lasted until 1933 though these photographs would have been taken circa 1925-1930) [see Rogue Valley Photographers website]. The costs of travel made the photographs of sites in Oregon and California unprofitable so he devoted himself first to family photographs and then commercial work in and around Medford. An advertisement in the Central Point American, April 12, 1934 reveals he sold his photo equipment to Mr. Ray Anders as he prepared to move to Santa Cruz, California to retire.

Description:
A pristine stereographic card taken by Daniel Francis Mitchell who photographed Arizona views for sale from 1877. Mitchell also was in partnership with Baer and remained active in the territory until at least 1883. Accompanied with an envelope from the War Department Headquarers of Arizona addressed to Major A.J. McGonnigle, Chief Quartermaster, [Fort] Whipple, postmarked March 16, 1885. This was a turbulent time since on July 13 he had to report to the Quartermaster General of the U.S. about Samuel Drachman's failure at Fort Huachuca where what the latter did amounted to taking kickbacks of more than $40 on each 100 pounds of hay. Eventually, Drachman was only sued for $475 but it was a blot on his record. Of course, it should be noted that the parade of quartermasters at Fort Whipple were accused of the same thing such as declaring weapons obsolete and then selling them to the local Prescott merchants. This charge was never proved and since the Fort was considered essential in suppressing… Read More

Description:
Prescott, [AZ], 1864. Slight variations in text from the printed published the next year (1865). Possibly W. Claude Jones copy. The printed version adds: "shall take effect and be in force from and after the passage of this act." Two page document signed by Governor John Goodwin, President of the Legislative Council, Coles Bashford and W. Claude-Jones who was Speaker of the House of Representatives. Page one measures 9 1/2" x 15; Page two measures 10 1/2" x 15". Included is the original bill number (46) signed by James Anderson who was the official clerk of the House. It measures 4" x 5 1/4". This remarkable document is important for several reasons. First, it can be compared for minute differences with the actual printed forms of both the Journals of the First Legislative Assembly as well as the Acts, Memorials and Resolutions which were published the following year (1865). The goal was to both exclude minors (under age 21) from losing their hard earned money as well as helping each county to… Read More

Description:
Prescott, AZ: Gosham A. Bray Treasurer Tonto Basin Wagon Road, 1883. The check is issued to one Henry Burns under the authority of Gorham A. Bray, who was the Treasurer for the Tonto Basin Wagon Road Commissioners. Henry Burns worked nine days for $10. From an oral history by five of the living Arizona Rangers made at Northern Arizona University, we learn of the initial roads that were built around the Grand Canyon to haul lumber from which were built ferry boats on the Colorado River. A ferry operated until 1882, then the Babbitt family hired Indian help and built a road for people coming from Nevada and Utah. This Tonto Basin Road was being built in 1883. Eventually, these roads connected Prescott, Kingman and went all the way to Flagstaff as well as Strawberry and Pine. The Sharlot Hall Museum has a nice picture of Gorham Bray, the Treasurer for the Tonto Basin Road operation who later became Mayor of Flagstaff. Though the Soldier Tanks are not in Bryd Howell Granger or Will C. Barnes, they were… Read More

2 three page letters (rectos only) Both letters were kept in original mailing envelope date stamped November 23, 1944 and written from the U.S.S. Rixey. Letter I is dated Nov. 12, 1944. It is addressed presumably to his wife and daugther. He answers her that, yes he had heard Tokyo Rose about a year earlier. He says: "it seems like the Nips has the idea that they are really spreading propaganda...but it just offers a good laugh" along with a good musical program. There is "Rosie" and another who comes on before her and goes by the name "Little Orphan Annie of Tokyo". Also a man who reads news which is a lot of baloney since we are right there--I guess censor will pase this talke since it is also broadcast in the states. Letter II is addressed to his parents. Concerned his dad is working for Post home but not sure what is going on. Writes that they gave the carnival [?] to help finance it. Had heard his little daughter had stole the show at the installation. His wife Jeanie wrote and said… Read More

Description:
This collection of original material of Jerome Myers includes two photographs of Jerome Myers, taken by Leo Grubman, one taken in 1910 [when they shared an art gallery and studio] and signed by Leo Grubman, the other taken by Grubman circa 1932. There is a photograph of his wife Ethel (photographer not identified). After his success at the Armory Show in 1911 with the sale of his painting "The Mission Tent" he was able to move into a new studio at the new Carnegie Hall building. There are two warmly personal letters with biographical items of interest plus some artistic representation. The first letter is to his friend Leo Grubman, dated January 21, 1914, and discusses with pride his daughter Virginia's dance recital and his busy schedule. There is a second letter (lacking the first page) of one page signed "Jerome" and circa 1915 of his move to Carmel, New York where he bought 18 acres in a very rustic setting (where he has made a few nice ink sketches along the margins of the letter). In this collection which Martin gave to Lee Hendrix in her uncorrected proof copy of Septuagenarian Stew, as his New Year's Gift in 1990 three of what he called poignant Bukowski poems. Dr. Frances Gillmor in the English Department was better known as the specialist at the University of Arizona on Mexican art and culture but she was a good friend of the Publisher of the University of Kentucky Press, Jerry Crouch who had been her student. He begins by sending her a 2 ALS 32 line message on Christmas card hand printed in exquisite calligraphic hand of a forthcoming book on the California Gold Rush but how it caused him to recall of her appreciation of their book Green Mount and the Fleets. He also speaks of De Arriaga's work on Peru which they are publishing but they are waiting for a dust jacket blurb which he will be writing soon. On his 4ALS letter about the book he speaks of the editing, the marking, the stapling, and the pasted together at early stages of the printing. This is an eloquent description of an editor's work. Here he looks back at taking her course on English Composition which got him started. He speaks here of his work in photography and the sketches he had previously… Read More
