The Problems Of The Interaction Of Elementary Particles: Transcriptions of Lectures By Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer, Given At The California Institute Of Technology, Pasadena, California, January, 1950

By Oppenheimer, J. Robert

Caltech, Pasadena, CA, 1950; First Edition; 8 1/2" x 11", 89 pages. A series of six lectures on contemporary research in the area of the interaction of elementary particles, delivered by J. Robert Oppenheimer at Cal Tech in Pasadena, California, from Jan. 16 to Jan. 27, 1950. In his introduction, Oppenheimer outlines the content of the lectures: "The way I thought I would plan these lectures is, today, to try to give a brief introduction in which I describe some of the interactions which we need to try to understand, the rudimentary background of theory in terms of which one has tried to codify experience, and, above all, the historical and logical reasons for the treatment of electrodynamics, which is sort of a touchstone of the theory of interactions. I thought that in succeeding lectures I would try take up the recent developments in electrodynamics, try to explain in what sense they were satisfactory; how far experiment had indicated that they were right; what unsolved problems they led to, and three or four quite beautiful and unsuccessful attempts to round out these problems and therefore to put the subject of electrodynamics in a box by itself. And I thought that I would like to make clear the physical content of such words such as renormalization, regularization, compensation, and nonlocalizable theory, with which the physical literature is increasingly full." A 1950 Cal Tech transcription, typed, mimeographed, and hand bound in pink card wraps. Illustrated with a number of in-text mathematical equations and graphs. Fine, clean, crisp, bright and sharp. A scarce item.
