Oxford, England: Peter Lang, 2006. First Edition. Softcover. Very Good. Trade paperback. 8.8 in. x 5.8 in., pp. 214. Light rubbing to covers; small creases to bottom corners of covers. Unmarked interior. Michel Henry (1922 - 2002) was a French philosopher, phenomenologist and novelist. He wrote five novels and numerous philosophical works and lectured at universities in France, Belgium, the United States, and Japan. According to Henry, life can never be seen from the exterior, as it never appears in the exteriority of the world. Life feels itself and experiences itself in its invisible interiority and in its radical imminance. In the world we never see life itself, but only living beings or living organisms; we cannot see life in them. In the same way, it is impossible to see another person's soul with the eyes or to perceive it at the end of a scalpel. Henry's philosophy goes on to aver that we undergo life in a radical passivity, we are reduced to bear it permanently as what we have not wanted,… Read More

New York: Philosophical Library, 1966. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine / Very Good Plus. Octavo, 5.5 x 8.3 in., pp. ix + 79. Inscribed and signed by author on front free endpaper. Rose-red boards with publisher's emblem embossed in blind to front. Gilt title to spine. Yellow publisher's stain to top-edge. Light rubbing to dustjacket covers. Ward introduces the philosophical construct of "functional purpose"; that is, "unless the innate purpose of man is understood, individual man lacks the essential knowledge required to properly direct his thoughts and actions in the fulfillment of the self. Unless the individual so functions that he is in harmony with man's basic reason for being, he fails to develop in a way indicated by his innate nature. This failure results in a sense of frustration in life, an inability to find solid happiness through self-fulfillment." (from the bookjacket).
