The images and text are a "prose poem in praise of motherhood and of the home where God is honored and the simple events of the day are glorified by the gift of grace." In another sense, the images are a look at how the women and children of a certain class lived without their men during the war. Produced in memory of and dedicated to one of Dorr's daughters, who died the year of publication. Photographs by Nell Dorr; text by Tasha Tudor. Once a student of Brodovitch, Wingate Paine (1915-1987) became one of the hottest advertising photographers in NYC in the 1960s, on par with Avedon and Penn, photographing the iconic Volkswagen Beetle ads, for example. In the mid-1960s Paine set aside his successful advertising career to devote himself to Mirror of Venus, which he described as a "confirmation of my feelings toward beauty and beautiful women." After finishing the book and overseeing its subsequent nine editions, he retired from photography and became a spiritual teacher. Signed copies are very scarce. Photographs by Wingate Paine; texts by Francoise Sagan and Federico Fellini. SIGNED BY PAINE and inscribed on the ffep "To Joanne and Pasquale,/and the memories you have/to look forward to./Wingate/12 June, 1972/(What a great evening!)" Additionally, the dedicatee--Natahli, Paine's wife--has inscribed on the last page, above her printed dedication: "To Joanne & Pasquale -/Thank you for a/beautiful evening -/XXOO [smiley face]/Natahli."
