A beautiful, fresh copy of the true first edition with none of the seemingly inevitable spine fading. This copy Inscribed by Wright in the year of publication: "To Ray M. Lawless with my best wishes. Sincerely, Richard Wright. 6/29/40. Chicago." Ray M. Lawless was the author of *Folksingers and Folksongs in America* (1960). His archive of manuscripts and photographs on folk music and singers resides at The American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. A superior copy of one of the handful of great classics of 20th Century fiction, with a nice association from the year of publication.

Very Good in a Good first-issue jacket, unclipped ($2.50), crossed out in pencil with 1.00 next to the printed price, faded at the spine, small chips to the corners and edges. Blue buckram with white and red ink panels and lettering on the spine and front board, a few stains on the boards. Bound with a forward lean and some reading wear, clean internally.
