From the foreword: "'The work of Jan Tschichold, typographer and type designer’ is the title of the exhibition to which this catalogue is an introduction. Lake other exhibition titles, it says much, but not nearly enough. It illuminates, like the beam of a searchlight, only one part of Tschichold’s work. His achievement was far broader and more complex, and the exhibition tries to bring this out. In an article published for his 70th birthday he was called ‘praeceptor typographiae’.
