Signed by the author, this is a beautifully bound copy of this beloved tale. 'Mary Poppins' first appeared in a short story in 1926 titled 'Mary Poppins and the Match Man' which introduced Poppins and Bert, the street artist. Travers then went on to create this children's book regarding her characters. It was Travers's first literary success. After this first novel, she continued writing many books in the series following Mary. A very scarce work, made even rarer by Travers' signature to the recto of front endpaper. The personal inscription from the author reads 'Ramona Heidman with love from Pamela Travers Christmas 1934'. First edition, first issue. This book has been inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper in period blue fountain pen ink. The book is the second of the eight Mary Poppins book to be published written by P. L. Travers. (The first book, Mary Poppins, being published in England a year previously.) There is a small minor dent to the side of the spine under the s of the author s name and a very minor cloth crack on the bottom edge of the front board which is barely worth the mention. Overall the boards and spine are bright with nice green imprinting. Very uncommon to find in this condition. The top page edges are stained a dark red as issued by the publisher. The First UK Printing of this omnibus edition published by Peter Davies in 1940. The BOOK is in Very Good++ condition. Light pushing at the spine ends. Red lettering to the boards remains bright. Light toning and dustiness to the text-block but the pages remain very clean. A neat previous owner's name and date to the upper front end-paper. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good condition. Some loss at the upper spine end and corners. A 4cm closed tear to rear upper spine fold. Some toning to the folds with a little light marking to the covers in places. A small amount of tape reinforcement to the verso which does not show through to the front. The wrapper remains very attractive in the removable Brodart archival cover. The first omnibus edition of the first two 'Mary Poppins' titles wonderfully illustrated throughout by Mary Shepard. In original unclipped jacket priced at 5s net. A bright copy with just a little pushing to the corners and a hint of toning to the spine tips. Internally very clean, without name, inscription or bookplate. The dust jacket, which is now protected in a removable, clear cover (not shown), is a scarce survivor - a little dust marked with a few black marks on the rear panel and toning to the spine. There is rubbing to to the spine tips which are a little frayed with short tears and minimal loss at the joints, corners and edges.
