This is Taylor's first book and features her "Codfish Sherlock" Asey Mayo. This edition is very scarce, with just two copies traced at auction in the jacket. From the library of the renowned bibliophile Lawrence M. Solomon (1931-2014), with his bookplate to the inside cover of the solander box. Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spine and front cover in green, single rule frame to front cover in blind, top edge blue, pictorial tan endpapers. With dust jacket. Spine gently rolled, light rubbing to extremities, top edge a little faded, small paper mark to foot of front free endpaper; a very good, bright copy in the jacket with, lightly faded spine, a little faint soiling to covers, and slight chipping and creasing to extremities, tape repair to verso. Very Good+, lightly rubbed along edges, subtle lean; lacking dust jacket, clad in facsimile. Signed by the author on the illustrated front free endpaper, neatly inscribed, "This is the first book I ever autographed - by request - but I hope at least it's legible [signed] Phoebe Atwood Taylor." Apparently this copy is the very first book of her own the Boston author ever signed. A unique copy of her first novel, a comic mystery which debuted Asey Mayo.

A good, generally clean, original hard cover first edition with moderate shelf wear, rubbed at all corners, spine cloth color lightened, minor exterior soiling; interior very good minus, front hinge cracked butiternal binding solid, paper moderately yellowed with soiling to the fore-edge. A good, original hard cover first edition (stated) BUT with significant wear primarily to the spine which is slightly canted, spine cloth darkened and frayed at top and bottom edges; interior very good, generally clean, paper moderately yellowed. Lacking dust jacket.
