Lettering faded from spine, some rubbing and a lot of staining on cover, discard stamp on eps, separation on title page, pages iv-v and xiv-xv of preface, back ep, starting on front ep, owner's name on front ep, staining on eps and some pages, pages tanned, the first of the four maps is missing, fraying on top edge of map 2, for all that, binding good, still quite readable. Oversize book – extra shipping charges will apply, especially for international and priority orders as this will not fit into a flat rate envelope.

Complete in two (2) volumes, uniformly bound in olive cloth, lettered in gilt, illus. in gilt, white, brown, and rust. 1st ed. (matching dates). xxvii,528 + x,483,12 pp., 100+ illus., 2 large maps. Cover cloth modestly soiled/darkened by age, spine panels somewhat tanned and dulled. Mild rubbing to corners and spine extremities, minor rubbing to joints. Mended hinges, Vol. I lacking rear flyleaf. Both maps intact, with minor separation at a few fold junctures and mild tanning. Tanned text block edges, Vol. I stained along upper text block fore-edge, bleeding into margins to 1/4-3/8" through latter half of interior. Former owner signature, dated 1886, on front blank of each volume. Overall, some cosmetic issues, but a solid set..

Additional 3 folding maps in volume 1. Minimal foxing, edges rubbed. Front hinge v. 1 is slightly loose else tight volumes. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 528;483 pages .

Probably printed in England for Harpers at the same time as the Sampson, Low issue. Pagination is identical and the setting appears to be as well. Illustrated with over 100 full-page plates and in-text drawings, folding maps, large maps in the pockets of each volume. Original green cloth blocked in red, black, brown and gilt on the spines and upper covers in pictorial designs. Spines darkened, light wear to the hinges and edges, one map with some roughness along the edge, else a very good set. .

The folding maps are in excellent condition, without tears. Original publisher's decorated cloth, very minor smudging but with bright colors; interior absolutely excellent. Withdrawn from the New Jersey Historical Society, with their bookplate indicating a gift from Marcus S. Ward and their inconspicuous blindstamp on each title. A wonderful copy. First American edition, published the same time in London. Already a famous explorer, Stanley was approached by King Leopold II of the Belgians to assist in opening up the Congo region for development and "westernization," although his main intent was to exploit the natural resources of the region for himself. A full account of Stanley's five years of prodigious industry in founding the Congo Free State and setting it on its feet for Leopold II of Belgium. Illustrated with over one hundred full-page and smaller illustrations, two large folding maps in rear pockets and several smaller maps, lacks the last page of the preface. Handsomely bound by Bayntun in 3/4 dark brown crushed morocco over brown cloth, raised bands with compartments lettered and decoratively stamped in gilt, top edges gilt. While it lacks the last page of the preface, this set is in remarkable condition. Very nice.

Sir Henry Morton Stanley (1841 1904) was a journalist and explorer renowned for his adventures in Africa. After emigrating to America in 1859, Stanley worked as a journalist for the New York Herald. In 1869 he was instructed to undertake an expedition to find the missionary David Livingstone, and the success of this mission brought him public recognition and financial success.
