Description:
Garden City, NY:: Doubleday,, 1981.. Near fine in very good dust jacket (some overall edgewear to the dj, now protected by an archival cover) . First printing. A thoughtful biography of the too-short life of the woman who wrote one of the most controversial American novels of the 20th century. "In September, 1956, Peyton Place burst onto the American scene. .. Its publication was also an extraordinary story of personal triumph. Grace Metalious, an unpretentious housewife from the wrong side of the tracks, had written an explosive bestseller. From a ramshackle cottage in a small New England milltown, she zoomed to national stardom. She met movie stars, famous writers, and the hangers-on who gravitate to those who achieve sudden wealth. She partied with the glamorous; she traveled; always a generous friend, she entertained lavishly. It was a Cinderella dream. But it did not last." Sources, index. 395 pp.

First printing. The sequel to the 1956 bestseller - set in a small straitlaced New England town - which has become part of our language. "In 1959, the sizzling sequel, 'Return to Peyton Place', picked up where 'Peyton Place' left off: Allison MacKenzie, now the author of America's No. 1 bestseller, is thrown into the glamorous whirl of the smart set of New York and Hollywood. At home, the rest of the most controversial characters in 1950s American fiction continue to create a stir in this ongoing expose of sex, hypocrisy, social inequity, and class privilege in contemporary America. The main plot follows the lives of three women-lonely and repressed Constance MacKenzie; her illegitimate daughter Allison; and her employee Selena Cross, a girl from across the tracks, or "from the shacks." The novel describes how they come to terms with their identity as women and sexual beings in a small New England town. Hypocrisy, social inequities and class privilege are recurring themes in a tale that includes incest, abortion, adultery, lust and murder. The term "Peyton Place" became a generic label for any community whose inhabitants have sordid secrets. Several characters and events. Peyton Place (1956). Julien Messner, inc. Description:
New York: Julian Messner, Inc., 1959. First Edition, First Printing. . Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. The sequel to Metalious' 1950s bestseller, "Peyton Place," which exposed the hypocrisy and prejudice hiding just under the surface manners and morality of a small New England town in mid-20th century America. "Return To Peyton Place" continues the assault on the false fronts and pretensions of middle class society. Text is age-tanned with slightly soiled edges; boards show a bit of shelf wear, o/w boards and text are clean and unmarked, tight and square. The dustjacket shows an inch-long, closed tear on the lower edge of the front panel, a few smaller tears, chipping and wear at the corners and spine ends but no other significant flaws or damage; it is not price-clipped. A good copy in a very decent dustjacket.
