1984. Exceptional letter signed by Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher to Nobel Prize-winning economist Friedrich von Hayek. One page, on Thatcher's official 10 Downing Street letterhead and dated May 22nd 1984, the letter reads, "Dear Professor Hayek," I have it in mind on the occasion of the forthcoming list of Birthday Honours to submit your name to The Queen with a recommendation that Her Majesty may be graciously pleased to approve that you be appointed a Member of the Order of the Companions of Honour. I should be glad to know if this would be agreeable to you. I shall take no steps until I have your reply. "Yours sincerely, Margaret Thatcher." Accompanied by a large original black and white photograph of Hayek taken at the honorary appointment at Buckingham Palace in which, he was in fact, awarded the Companion of Honour Medal by Queen Elizabeth II. Description:
[London:] 11 February, 1975. A pivotal moment in British history 1 page octavo, mimeographed text, signatures by hand in various pens. The document has unfortunately been affected by flood damage, leading to noticeable running of the ink. Slight crease from where it has been sometime folded. Overall in acceptable condition. The announcement of Margaret Thatcher's election as leader of the Conservative Party, signed by Edmund Du Cann, who presided over the election as chairman of the 1922 Committee, and by ten other members of the committee. This was one of a small number of copies, all signed by hand, which were distributed to announce the leader; this is the only example which can be traced on the market. Following the first ballot, where she defeated the former prime minister Edward Heath, Thatcher was here elected on the second ballot with well over half the votes, defeating her future ministers Willie Whitelaw, Geoffrey Howe, and James Prior. The document announces their relevant vote count, and… Read more

From Margaret Thatcher's estate Colour photograph with white mount, printed label at head, framed and glazed in a black wooden frame. Image size: 30 x 38 cm, frame size 48 x 56 cm. Posthumous Margaret Thatcher printed library label pasted on reverse. In very good condition. Margaret Thatcher's own copy of the official cabinet photograph taken 7 July 1983, the first cabinet photograph after her landslide victory in the June 1983 election, signed by herself and every other member of the cabinet. This is one of two signed 1983 cabinet photographs, this in colour, the other in black and white, which were kept by Thatcher until her death in 2013, and here appears on the market for the first time after acquisition directly from her estate. Thatcher used the election to reshuffle the cabinet, and some faces are noticeable by their absence. Francis Pym had made the mistake in the campaign of saying that landslides did not produce good governments, and was promptly sacked, along with David Howell and Janet… Read more

The photograph was kept by Thatcher until her death in 2013, and here appears on the market for the first time after acquisition directly from her estate. 1985 was a strong year for Thatcher, with her authority barely contestable; the miners' strike was finally defeated in March, and the Anglo-Irish Agreement was signed in November. The photograph consequently offers a snapshot of Thatcher at her apogee, with a cabinet in her own image, near-unanimously loyal and united, with the few remaining dissenters… Read more

With a printed presentation message on back, together with the framer's stamp of Geoffrey Viven Ltd of Cheltenham. Painting size: 46 x 30 cm; frame size: 64 x 49 cm. In excellent condition. A painting of Chequers, the prime minister's country retreat, executed by one of Margaret Thatcher's chief lieutenants, the staunch Thatcherite Nicholas Ridley, and presented to her by the cabinet to mark her tenth anniversary as prime minister. Thatcher adored Chequers, later writing in her memoirs that 'I do not think anyone has stayed long at Chequers without falling in love with it' (Downing Street Years, p. 36). Ridley was chosen as the painter due to his well-regarded artistic abilities, being a keen amateur artist throughout his life, with his works displayed at the annual display of MP's artistic efforts in the House of… Read more

In excellent condition, presented in an aluminium frame with presentation slip in bottom right corner, with UV acrylic glazing. From Margaret Thatcher's personal estate. On Mother's Day, 29 March 1987, Margaret Thatcher started on a five day state visit to the USSR hosted by Mikhail Gorbachev, the first official visit by a British Prime Minister for 12 years. Stanley McMurty, a well known British cartoonist under the pen name Mac, utilised the situation to produce the present cartoon, published in the Daily Mail on the 30 March, portraying the flower delivery company Interflora attempting to deliver flowers to Thatcher on behalf of her children and running foul of Soviet border guards. The border guard's reaction, which was the printed caption in the newspaper, is written in pencil underneath by McMurty, and reads "Speak up, dog! What's the meaning of this coded message... The photograph measures 8 inches by 10 inches. Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 14 inches by 16 inches. Rare and desirable signed by both Gorbachev and Thatcher. Color photograph of Big Ben Tower, signed by six British prime ministers: Edward Heath, Margaret Thatcher, James Callaghan, John Major and Tony Blair. In fine condition. The photograph measures 8 inches by 10 inches. Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 14.25 inches by 16.25 inches. A rare and desirable piece of history. Big Ben is the nickname for the Great Bell of the clock at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in London and is usually extended to refer to both the clock and the clock tower. The tower is officially Elizabeth Tower, renamed to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II in 2012; before that, it was known simply as the Clock Tower. The tower was designed by Augustus Pugin in a neo-gothic style. When completed in 1859, it was, says horologist Ian Westworth, "the prince of timekeepers: the biggest, most accurate four-faced striking and chiming clock in the world".[4] It stands 315 feet (96 m) tall, and the climb from ground level to the belfry is 334… Read more

Black and white photograph of the 10 Downing Street doorway, signed by six British prime ministers: Edward Heath, Margaret Thatcher, James Callaghan, John Major, Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. In fine condition. The photograph measures 8 inches by 10 inches. Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 15 inches by 17 inches. A rare and desirable piece of history. 10 Downing Street is the official residence of the post of the First Lord of the Treasury, which for most of the 1700 and 1800's and continuously since 1905 is a position that has been held by the Prime Minister. It has, therefore, become the location of the United Kingdom's headquarters, containing both office, living, and entertaining space for government officials. The house contains over 100 rooms and was the combination of three houses put together. It's proximity to Buckingham Palace and the Palace of Westminster made it an ideal location out of which to live and work. Margaret Thatcher said that Number 10 had… Read more
