Description:
London: Geoffrey Bles, 1942. First Edition. Hard Cover. Dust Jacket. (London: Geoffrey Bles 1942). First UK Edition. Publisher's black boards with paper label to the spine. A VG copy with no inscriptions with an attractive former owner's book-plate to the verso of the front free end-paper. The paper label the spine is is very slightly chipped and darkened from cream to brown. The bottom right hand corner of the front free end-paper has minor surface rubbing which is likely a production fault In the RARE VG D/W priced 5s net to the inside flap (as called for). The D/W is the correct first issue with the reference to "THE PROBLEM OF PAIN" to the front cover. The D/W has a slither of loss to the head and tail of the spine (not affecting any lettering) and a couple of brown splashes to the front panel and one to the spine. The fragile D/W has none of the usual tears customarily seen. Photographs/scans available upon request.

Description:
New York: The Macmillan Company, 1943. Hardcover. First Edition, First Printing of the North American Edition, published the year after Geoffrey Bles and with all requisite criteria as called for by Brown in his 'In Pursuit of C.S. Lewis: Adventures in Collecting His Works.' 8vo. 160pp. Publisher's dark maroon cloth. VERY GOOD in Very Good dust jacket protected in a removable mylar cover. The book itself shows some very light rubbing at the bottommost of the front board, endpapers and paste-downs with even, natural and light toning, former owner name neatly on the endpaper, otherwise the binding is strong and tight, the text is clean and unmarked, and the boards are bright and colorful. The dust jacket shows some rubbing at the edges with small chips, the occasional light blemish, spine ever so slightly toned, otherwise remains bright and distinct, retaining the original price of $1.50. As pictured.

Near fine, 1st edition (2nd printing one month later), missing d/j, black boards, titling on spine plate a little soiled; text block firm, unmarked pages tight and crisp.. 12mo (190 x 130 / 7_"" x 5""). A milestone in the history of popular theology, ÔThe Screwtape LettersÕ is an iconic classic on spiritual warfare and the power of the devil. This profound and striking narrative takes the form of a series of letters from Screwtape, a devil high in the Infernal Civil Service, to his nephew Wormwood, a junior colleague engaged in his first mission on earth trying to secure the damnation of a young man who has just become a Christian. Although the young man initially looks to be a willing victim, he changes his ways and is ÔlostÕ to the young devil. Dedicated to LewisÕs friend and colleague J.R.R. Tolkien, ÔThe Screwtape LettersÕ is a timeless classic on spiritual conflict and the invisible realities which are part of our religious experience.

Description:
London: Geoffrey Bles: The Centenary Press. The first printing of the first edition of this book was published in February 1942. This copy is the eighth printing of the first edition in August of the same year. Stated on the verso of the title page: Reprinted with some alterations by kind permission of "The Guardian". 160pp; numbering commencing at page nine. Black covers, paper label on the spine, no inscriptions or foxing, natural paper ageing only. The dust jacket with black lettering and red borders and blurbs on the front cover is not price clipped; some wear at the extremities and small losses to the spine. Early copies of this book with the dust jacket are not easy to find because of the flimsy and brittle nature of the jacket, printed during wartime restrictions on paper. This one is now protected by a removable cover; small sections of the back have been professionally reinforced with rice paper ( a reversible process).
