Description:
New York: Viking, 1936. First edition. Fine in very good plus jacket.. First printing of the pacifist children's classic, soon to be banned in Franco's Spain at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War. The first collaboration of Lawson and Leaf, FERDINAND was a hit with children but caused controversy among adults: the story of the bull who would rather smell the flowers than fight with the other bulls was read politically in the context of the Spanish Civil War. Although he hadn't meant for the book to carry an ideological message, Leaf received angry letters claiming he was "deliberately corrupting children of an impressionable age" (quoted in Davis). A wonderful work, in which the beauty of nonconformity still reads as subversive. A nice copy in jacket, and scarce as such. 8.25'' x 7.25''. Original quarter tan cloth, red pictorial boards. Original unclipped ($1.00) red pictorial dust jacket. Yellow pictorial endpapers. Illustrated throughout with black-and-white line drawings by Lawson. [72]… Read more

Description:
Viking, 1936. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. An advance copy of the first edition, with "First Published September 1936 on the copyright page." The book is larger than the first edition, and has rough uncut pages. The cover also differs, with brown cloth and sections of the eventual first edition cover attached. This is obviously some sort of advance production copy, probably prepared by Viking Press for internal use. The only copy we have ever seen or heard of. It is in very good condition, with the book block lying loose in the covers. There is no evidence of glue, so the two were probably never attached. Housed in a custom-made collector's slipcase.

Description:
New York: Viking, 1936. First edition. Very good in good jacket.. First printing, in later printing dust jacket, with 3 Christmas cards from the Leaf family laid in. Each of the Christmas cards laid in has an illustration by Leaf created especially for the card. One has an extra pen note and ink doodle by Leaf with a long note on the verso from Leaf's wife. Another is inscribed by Leaf. A wonderful work, in which the beauty of nonconformity still reads as subversive. 8'' x 7''. Original quarter tan cloth, red pictorial boards. Description:
New York: The Viking Press, 1938. Early printing of Munro Leaf's beloved children's classic. Octavo, original half cloth, illustrated endpapers. Boldly signed by Munro Leaf on the title page. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Illustrated by Robert Lawson. "This is perhaps one of the finest 20th-century examples of the inspired wedding of a text and illustrations to make a children’s book that as a whole is even greater than the sum of its parts-which are in themselves very fine indeed. The simple, delightful Leaf story about a Spanish bull who prefers the fragrance of flowers to the roar of the bull-ring is lovingly illustrated by Robert Lawson. The overworked word ‘classic’ is well deserved here. Children have adored The Story of Ferdinand ever since the book was published" (Early Children’s Books and Their Illustrations). Translated into over 60 languages, Munro Leaf's classic became a number one bestseller in 1938 and has never gone out of print since.… Read more

Description:
London: Hamish Hamilton, 1937. First UK edition, first impression, of this classic children's tale of a bull who likes to smell flowers under the cork tree rather than participate in bull fights. It was first published in America the previous year, just months before the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, and many saw it as a pacifist title. It was subsequently banned in several countries, including Spain. The Story of Ferdinand was "the first American picture book to be labeled subversive... In the United States, the book was accused of promoting fascism, anarchism, and communism" (Silvey, p. 25), though these accusations did not prevent it from outselling Gone With the Wind to become the number one bestseller in America in 1938. International responses were just as polarized. Hitler ordered the work to be burned, while conversely Stalin allowed it to be the only non-communist children's title allowed in Poland, and Mahatma Gandhi proclaimed it as his favourite book. The title served as the basis for… Read more
