New York: Frederick A. Stoke Co., 1920. First title in the Doctor Dolittle series, finely bound First edition, first printing, of the first title in the Doctor Dolittle series. Though born in England, Lofting settled in Connecticut and had his first book published in New York. The book is attractively illustrated with his own naïve pen-and-ink drawings. Octavo. Finely bound by the Chelsea Bindery in bright blue morocco, titles and decoration to spine gilt, raised bands, twin rule to turn-ins, original endpapers bound in at front, blue white and red patterned endpapers, gilt edges. Colour frontispiece, calligraphic title and 32 illustrations by the author, of which 11 are full-page, 2 of these printed on plate paper. Neat small ownership signature to half-title, an excellent copy in a fine binding.

New York: Frederick Stokes, 1920. Decorative Cloth. Very Good. A WARM, PERSONAL INSCRIPTION BY HUGH LOFTING on the half-title. A solid copy to boot of the 1920 1st edition of the first published title in the beloved "Doctor Dolittle" series. Solid and VG in its decorative orange cloth, with a clean pictorial mount at the front panel. Tender (but still perfectly sturdy) front inner hinge, light soiling to the rear panel, very light foxing at the text. A very presentable copy, uncommon as such, with the charming Hugh Lofting inscription.

THE STORY OF DOCTOR DOLITTLE, Stokes, 1920, first edition, slight wear to the spine extremities, some age toning to the page edges, else a tight vg+ copy with unbroken inner hinges in the publishers original pictorial binding. Profusely illustrated by the author/artist. Once the copy of famous syndicated cartoonist William Ireland (of the Columbus Dispatch), who had made a Christmas gift of this book to his family doctor with not only an inscription to him dated 1921, but also with a full page drawing making this copy unique and of course very special. The first book in this marvelous series and the origin book for the film of the same name along with Ireland's original pen & ink art. A PETER PARLEY TO PENROD title. (Ireland's doctors name was James Dolittle and thus the reason of this as a gift to him, I'm sure.)

The US edition predates the UK edition by four years. The series has been adapted many times including films starring Rex Harrison or Eddie Murphy and a stage musical by Leslie Bricusse. Original pale orange cloth, spine and front cover lettered in blue, pictorial label to front cover, illustrated endpapers. Coloured frontispiece, 2 plates, 9 full-page illustrations, 21 illustrations in text, and decorated initials, all by the author. Spine tips slightly bumped, spine toned, extremities slightly rubbed; a very good and internally clean copy.

Small tear and crease to half title; wear spot on ffep. Tiny stain on front board. Lettering strong and unrubbed, which is unusual. Tissue guard intact. A very attractive copy of a fanciful children's book usually found in bad shape.

Duodecimo. 5 x 7.5 in. xii, 180 pp. Fair in original red cloth boards with black decorative titling and illustrated plate on the front. The cloth is fraying on the spine and the front hinge is split towards the top, as are the interior hinges. A prior owner has place a small black-and-white picture of Lofting on the lower front free endpaper, as well as two book plates on the interior front cover. The first book in the Dolittle series, inscribed by Lofting on the front free endpaper, "For Alice, with the Author's Sincere Regards, Hugh Lofting.
