New York: Coward-McCann, 1928. First Edition. Copy number 228 of an edition limited to 250 numbered copies signed by the author / artist Wanda Gag. With an original wood engraving by Wanda Gag, not included in the book, which is also signed and dated by her in the year of publication, “’28’”. The image depicts a small cat curled up on the cushion of a rocking chair in a sitting room with a small round table and chair and two flower vases atop a draped pedestal nearby. The engraving itself measures 5 7/8” x 4 9/16” and is in a small paper frame (7 3/4” x 6 1/2”) with tissue guard. The book is in oblong format, 9 7/8” x 6 3/4”, with decorative endpapers, and is enclosed in the original publisher’s slipcase to which is affixed its special limited edition label. Millions Of Cats won a Newbery Honor award in 1929, one of the few picture books to do so. It is the oldest American picture book still in print. Once upon a time there was an old man and an old woman who were very lonely. They decided to get a cat, but when the old man went out searching, he found not one cat, but millions and billions and trillions of cats! Unable to decide which one would be the best pet, he brought them all home. How the old couple came to have just one cat to call their own is a classic tale that has been loved for generations.

The 1928 1st edition, 1st issue (with "Jersey City Printing Co." present at the copyright page), in its elusive 1st issue dustjacket (with no printed text apart from the title and author). The book is surprisingly clean and has held up very nicely. Solid and Near Fine in its wonderful yellow, red and black pictorial boards. The fragile dustjacket, mirroring the book's cover art, shows very light chipping to the panel edges and the spine ends, and several small closed tears along the spine. Still though, it merits a solid VG, remains a significantly above-average example and is crisp and very presentable. Oblong octavo, both written and illustrated by Wanda Gag and universally considered one of the great triumphs of early 20th century children's literature.

Limited First Edition: number 137 of 250 copies SIGNED by Wanda Gag on the colophon page.  No dust jacket, as issued.  Lacking both the slipcase and the signed woodcut by Gag.  Wanda Gag (1893-1946) was an award-winning artist whose work can be found in the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Museum of Modern Art, British Museum, and Philadelphia Museum of Art.  Millions of Cats, her first children's book, was a Newbery Honor book, while 2 later books were Caldecott Honor books.  The book is in very good+ condition: clean and tight, with some dulling of the color on the covers; 2 superficial scratches on the front cover; some very minor edgewear; relatively minor soiling on the rear cover.  Much nicer than it sounds.. A solid, perfectly serviceable copy of the 1928 1st edition, 2nd issue (without the 'Jersey City Printing Co.' slug on copyright page), IN THE WONDERFUL PICTORIAL DUSTJACKET. Clean and VG- in its matching pictorial boards, with pronounced creasing to the front free endpaper and title page, which also shows very light chipping and 1 small closed tear along the fore-edge. And in a crisp, price-clipped (all 4 flap corners are clipped --probably by the publisher), VG- dustjacket, with light creasing at the rear panel and very light chipping to the lower-tips. Oblong octavo, lovely black-and-white illustrations by the author thruout as well as beautiful matching color-illustrated endsheets and pastedowns.
