Henry William Herbert (1807-1858), grandson of the Earl of Carnaervon, arrived in New York in 1831. Herbert travelled in the eastern U.S. and Canada until his money ran out, and returned to New York, where he taught classics at a prep school for Columbia, and became a prolific contributor to American periodicals. Full red cloth boards, DJ price $10.95, ISBN printed below DJ price and on rear cover; number line reads "8 9 0 4 3 2 1 0"; in my own hand is "[1972]" written in pencil to the front endpaper, which would indicate that at some point I thought I was smart enough to figure out that was the printing date. Signed & lined on title page, inscribed "To Kirk". This came with a few items signed by SF artist Tim Kirk, but I have no way of knowing if a)., he goes by Kirk and b)., it is inscribed to him. Very minor rubbing to white map at rear panel, very light shelfwear. Main flaw is a few spots of foxing to top foredge. Near fine to fine overall. Herbert's signature on our website page of signatures is taken from this book, and matches all previous signatures we have handled.
