Description:
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1925. First edition. Octavo, 218 pages, the Scribner's dark bluish-green linen cloth, two marginal smudges at p.123. This is the John Talbot Copy. It has the first printing, second state of the dust jacket: the original "J" in Jay Gatsby on the rear panel of the dust jacket has been corrected with an upper-case J - with the lower curve of the original 'j' just peeking through. In a custom clamshell protective box. NOTE: The original dust jackets were about 4mm taller than the cloth bindings, making the top edge of the jacket uncommonly susceptible to damage. This jacket has an estimated 98% of its original paper, There are tears and punctures ( Ask to see more of photographs taken by Ted Tamburo Photography), and some discoloration on the inside of the jacket, smudge on the top cover of the book, bright spine gilt. Note: the jacket has been cleaned on both sides, and stabilized with Japanese tissue; and the book hinges repaired by The Chicago Conservation Center.… Read more

Description:
London: Chatto & Windus, 1926. First U.K. Edition. The first English edition of Fitzgerald's third novel and most enduring work, the story of a flamboyant racketeer's attempt to recapture the upper-class girl he fell in love with during the waning years of World War I. While hailed for many decades as an American classic, Gatsby was a commercial disappointment during its time; its two printings totaled 23,870 copies, and at the time of Fitzgerald's death in 1940, stacks of them still remained unsold in the Scribner's warehouse. The UK edition of Gatsby was published from the American plates of the second Scribner's edition, which incorporated corrections to the six textual errors in the first state of the text. Fitzgerald, eager for a better literary reputation in England than he ever enjoyed, was disappointed when his primary publisher, William Collins, turned down the opportunity to publish Gatsby, stating that to published the novel "would be to reduce the number of his readers rather than to… Read more

Description:
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1925. Near fine in restored jacket.. First edition, first printing of the famed novel exploring the poisons laced into the American dream - in the legendary original dust jacket, restored second issue (with "Jay" on rear panel). THE GREAT GATSBY has long captivated readers with its tragic lyricism; as a core text of English curricula, it is also one of the most read novels in US literature. In the realm of book collecting, THE GREAT GATSBY is the most famous of all modern first editions: like the Mona Lisa, it is now famous for being famous. Its reputation here lies in the celebrated dust jacket art by Francis Cugat. Fitzgerald was so taken with Cugat's painting that, when the publication of GATSBY was delayed another season, he begged his editor to ensure it would be saved for him: "For Christs sake don't give anyone that jacket you're saving for me. I've written it into the book" (quoted in Scribner). In this sense, the jacket art can be viewed as a "form of… Read more

Description:
Scribner's 1925 first edition, first printing. Book is in Good Condition with foxing present and a slight cracked rear hinge. Original first edition, third state dust jacket is missing the spine, most of the rear cover, and part of the rear flap, but retains the important front cover featuring Francis Cugat's "Celestial Eyes" work. Approximately 3,000 third state jackets were issued (compared to over 20,000 combined first and second state jackets). The original "Great Gatsby" dust jacket is considered the most valuable piece of paper in modern literature, with complete jackets selling for $150,000 and more. Not only is the jacket recognized as the most eloquent in American literary history, but Francis Cugat's artwork had an effect on Fitzgerald's evolution of his literary masterpiece, as the author responded to sketches and artwork shown to him before the book was complete, a perhaps unique occurrence in literary history. Fitzgerald wrote to his publisher in August 1924 from France: "For Christ's… Read more

Description:
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1941. Unfinished at the time of his death, F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Last Tycoon is a story of doomed love set against the extravagance of America's booming film industry. The studio lot looks like 'thirty acres of fairyland' the night that a mysterious woman stands and smiles at Monroe Stahr, the last of the great Hollywood princes. Enchanted by one another, they begin a passionate but hopeless love affair, starting with a fast-moving seduction as slick as a scene from one of Stahr's pictures. The romance unfolds, frame by frame, watched by Cecilia, a thoroughly modern girl who has taken her lessons in sentiment and cynicism from all the movies she has seen. Her buoyant humour and satirical eye perfectly complement Fitzgerald's panorama of Hollywood at its most lavish and bewitching. F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896-1940) has acquired a mythical status in American literary history, and his masterwork The Great Gatsby is considered by… Read more

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1925. First edition. original cloth; custom box. Very Good. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE OF FITZGERALD'S CLASSIC. In 1925, "Scribners published The Great Gatsby, the novel that secured Fitzgerald's enduring fame. He had reached his full maturity as a writer. The work is often described in terms of a meditation or vision of America because of its judicious use of myth, metaphor, and history. When Fitzgerald was first thinking about his third novel in July 1922, he wrote Perkins that he wanted 'to write something new--something extraordinary and beautiful and simple [and] intricately patterned' (qtd. in Bruccoli, Grandeur, p. 170). He knew that he was working near his peak--his artistic conscience was pure during the ten months of writing Gatsby. In April 1924 he wrote to Perkins from Great Neck, Long Island, 'I feel I have an enormous power in me now, more than I've ever had in a way ... This book will be a consciously artistic achievement and must depend on that as… Read more
