Written in direct response to (and rebuttal of) T.S. Stribling's 1922 novel "Birthright," which she and other African-American intellectuals felt presented an unrealistic and stereotypical depiction of black life in America. As literary editor of the NAACP's magazine "The Crisis" from 1919 to 1926, Fauset was an influential figure of the Harlem Renaissance. .
