Description:
Two sheets from an exceptionally rare privately produced mimeographed printing of Howl, preceding the first edition. One of 25 copies printed on rectos only in purple ink typed by the poet Robert Creeley and printed by Marthe Rexroth at S.F State, where she was a secretary, for the famous Six Gallery reading (also known as Six Angels in the Same Performance). This event, which took place at 3110 Fillmore Street in San Francisco on October 7, 1955 was the first important public poetry exhibition heralding the West Coast literary revolution of the Beat Generation. At the reading, five talented young poets--Allen Ginsberg, Philip Lamantia, Michael McClure, Gary Snyder, and Philip Whalen presented some of their latest works. They were introduced by Kenneth Rexroth, who was a kind of literary father-figure for the younger poets. It was at this reading that Allen Ginsberg performed the piece in public, which had been advertised by a postcard proclaiming: "Remarkable collection of angels all gathered at… Read more

Description:
San Francisco: City Lights Pocket Bookshop, 1956. Original wraps. Near Fine. A remarkable Association copy of the 1956 correct 1st edition. This copy not only conforms to all the original issue points but is in beautiful, near-pristine condition. Furthermore, THIS COPY IS SIGNED BY 5 OF THE KEY FIGURES IN THE BOOK'S GENESIS: 1) ALLEN GINSBERG (on the title page); 2) LAWRENCE FERLINGHETTI (on the copyright page); 3) LUCIEN CARR (on the dedication page); 4) WILLIAM BURROUGHS (also on the dedication page); and 5) CARL SOLOMON (on the first blank endpaper). In other words, this copy is signed by the book's author, its publisher and by 3 of its 5 dedicatees (only Jack Kerouac's and Neal Cassady's signatures are missing from this copy). Notably, of the 5 signatures, all critically important to the birth and evolution of "Howl", Lucien Carr's appears to be the most elusive. We know that Carr's relationship with the Beats grew tense early on and that he insisted his name be… Read more

Description:
City Lights Books, The Pocket Poets Series, 1956. This is the true first printing of the classic book of poetry signed by Mr. Ginsberg (with the wrap around label attached to the cover) and with the dedication to Lucian Carr. Inscribed to a relative, the book comes with its own clamshell case. Under the title he has written: "For Naomi Ginsberg Secretly" and it is inscribed as follows: "From her cousin Allen...For beautiful Irene, who got more beautiful decade after decade till August 22, 1965 Sunday. Portland, Oregon." This copy is a little beat (pardon the pun) with some staining and foxing on the cover. Still, a very desirable item. Scan available upon request.. Signed by Author. First Edition. Original Wraps. Good/very Good.

Description:
San Francisco: The City Lights Pocket Bookshop,, 1956. First edition from the library of a contemporary San Franciscan poet Duodecimo. Original stiff black wrappers, stapled as issued, with a white hand-pasted wraparound paper label printed in black. Very minor rubbing to extremities, light browning to wraparound label, edges faintly toned as often; nevertheless a very good copy indeed. First published edition, first printing, with the spelling "Lucien Carr" in the dedication, and the eighth line of the second paragraph on the rear cover beginning "Harlem". This copy is from the library of contemporary San Francisco poet Jean McLean, and has a calligraphic ownership inscription reading "Jean and Jo Mclean" to p. [4]. Jean McLean's work was published in the poetry collection Seven Stray Cats in Sausalito in 1957, alongside poets such as Gerald Stern, Laura Uronovitz, and Ginsberg's close friend Jack Gilbert, with whom McLean collaborated on two erotic novels under the joint pseudonym Tor Kung. Description:
Berkeley: Pacific Tape Library, 1956. First edition. Record LP. Very Good. A rare reel-to-reel tape in original labeled box containing Ginsberg reading his poetry including his best known poem, HOWL. Per our research, the first historic reading of Howl took place at the historic 1955 reading at San Francisco's SIX GALLERY for which no known recordings exist. The second reading was a February 1956 reading at Reed College in Portland (of which one known copy exists in the college's institutional holdings); and then this third known public reading was done on October 25, 1956 and is offered here in the original reel-to-reel format and labeled box. It has become almost cliche to talk about the beats and their influence on the greater literary and cultural zeitgeist, but it is no stretch of the imagination to cite Howl as one of the most iconic poems of the 20th century and any early recording of his reading of it must be viewed with more than a little reverence. We have not played the tape,… Read more

Description:
Edited by Barry Miles. NY: Harper & Row, [1986]. 4to. Hardbound in dust jacket. First edition. Superb presentation copy inscribed by Ginsberg with a drawing to his old friend, Ed White: "Allen Ginsberg for Ed White in Janne's presence 7/15/95 Naropa Institute Boulder Colorado." Opposite the inscription Ginsberg has done a drawing of a snake eating it's tail with stars and a crescent moon surrounding the snake. Ed White was a fellow Columbia University undergraduate in the '40s where he met Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac and was an influence on their spontaneous prose style when he suggested to Kerouac: "Why don't you just sketch in the street, like a painter but with words." Later, Ed White appeared as the character Tim Gray in On the Road. An important association copy to a friend who dates from the incipient stages of the Beat Generation. Fine.
