Sir Winston Churchill, in his Broadcast Appeal on behalf of the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund on Battle of Britain Sunday, 16 September 1951, said, 'Let us all welcome this chance to pay a small measure of THE DEBT WE OWE to the paladins of the Royal Air Force.' Another man of vision, Marshal of the Royal Air Force Viscount Trenchard founded the Fund in 1919, but it is doubtful whether even he foresaw that its resources would be desperately needed twenty years later in 1939 and onwards to meet the increasing needs of the RAF widows, disabled and survivors of the Second World War and their families. As for the younger generation-the first Cranwell Cadet to become Chief of the Air Staff, Marshal of the Royal Air Force Sir Dermot Boyle, when CAS said, 'The Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund is recognised both inside and outside the Service as not only one of the finest institutions of its kind in the world, but also as something that plays a very important part in the human side of Air Force life. In wishing the Fund continued success I am voicing the views of every member of the Royal Air Force.' The Very Rev. Dr W. R. Matthews, when Dean of St Paul's, said, 'But for the Battle of Britain, not only would there have been no Festival of Britain-there would have been no Britain. We must remember the young men whose sacrifices made the continued life of Britain possible.'
