Good(+) for age. 10 cms x 17 Cms. xxv+182+(6, pub.list); possibly lacking a portrait, front gutter open but quite secure, front pastedown browned, front endpaper has groove across centre caused by a pair of facing wrinkles, text otherwise generally clean and tight but wrinkle across bottom front corner to p.7/8 and rear endpapers heavily wrinkled - all this wrinkling appears to be a binding effect; covers generally clean, top spinerubbed and slightly chipped, occ. surface and slight extremety rubbing, bright gilt lettered and gilt-dec.panelled spine with good label, gilt border lines and patterned tooling to both boards. With portrait frontispiece. xxiv, (1)182, (6)pp. Sir Matthew Hale (1609-1676) was an influential English barrister, judge and lawyer. He took care of his grandchildren after the death of his son Robert Hale and his wife. The eldest was only five years old. Armorial bookplate to the front pastedown of Robert and Florence Vere O'Brien. Florence Vere O'Brien (1854-936) was a British diarist, philanthropist, and craftswoman who set up the The Limerick Lace School and Clare Embroidery. Condition: Very good. Rubbed with slight bumping. Light foxing to the first and last few pages, which is more pronounced on the frontis and title page.
