New York: Venture/Simon and Schuster, 1947. FIRST EDITION THUS, FIRST PRINTING THUS. NEAR FINE/VERY GOOD. ORIGINAL UNCLIPPED DUST JACKET. HATFIELD BOOKS AND MEMORABILIA, a FIVE STAR SELLER, presents the FIRST EDITION of HERMAN WOUK'S very first novel: AURORA DAWN, written during his final year's on a WWII ship in the Pacific fleet. Later on, Wouk would win the Pulitzer Prize for CAINE MUTINY, and his WIND'S OF WAR would become a famous television mini-series. Many other novelists, publishers and historians have called Wouk "an American Tolstoy." The 1947 date on the copyright page matches the 1947 on the title page, making this a FIRST EDITION THUS, FIRST PRINTING THUS. 5 1/2" x 8 1/8", 241 pages, with the ORIGINAL DUST JACKET. Overall book is NEAR FINE. Pages = FINE: old price on first fep, light staining from glue on front reverse cover and first and last fep's, else very clear, tight, sharp, no additional marks. Cover (blue cloth boards with gold gilt design and "H W" on front, gold gilt particulars on spine) = very good plus: rubbing to all, bumping to lower front corner, else extremely tight, clear and square, with no added marks. ORIGINAL DUST JACKET (grey paper with sketch of a wedding couple front, particulars in pink and white) = Very Good: moderate chipping to outside and top edges, 1/2" tear to top of spine, some rubbing to spine, some type of label removed from back taking off some of the print, else entire, fully readable, colors true. A TRUE COLLECTOR'S EDITION!

[i-viii+452+[453-56] pages. Octavo (8 1/8" x 5 3/4") bound in original publisher's medium blue cloth with gilt on spine with concentric impressed rectangle enclosing a gilt laurel branch on cover in original pictorial jacket. 50,000 copies of the first edition in dust jacket issued. (Pastore: 13) First edition. This is the "hotel novel" as it has become to be called, and it shows that odd dichotomy of Lewis that is the decisional measuring stick separating those who love Lewis and those who don't. Here is the story of an artist set against the story of a hotel clerk and here is Lewis equating art and hotel management. Most critics feel that this is not Lewis at his best because of this equation, that in setting out to talk about art, he ends up knee-deep in the hotel business. Of course, this misses the point. Lewis was the master of finding "art" in the commonplace and there is hardly a novel of his that does not touch on this issued. This second Doubleday book firmly established the format… Read More

Dust jacket in blue with red and white banner on cover lettered in verso, gilt and white on spine. 33,250 printed of the first edition in dust jacket. (Pastore:259) First edition. In the Summer of 1939, Lewis and Fay Wray collaborated loosely on a play titled (and unpublished) Angela is Twenty-Two. Lewis did the writing with the intention of playing the male lead; Fay Wray helped with the staging and visual dramatics. Lewis became more involved with drama and acting, even so far as joining Actors Equity, sponsored by Helen Hayes. When the play opened on December 30, 1939, it was well-received leading Lewis to take it on the road where he not only acted but directed as well. This tour became the narrative… Read More

Description:
London: Ward and Lock, 158, Fleet Street, 1865. Hardcover. Very Good. Octavo; vii, 216pp. In contemporary half leather over green cloth boards (a little rubbed and worn, remnants of early paper label to head of spine), five raised spine bands, gilt lettered leather spine label to second compartment, all page edges marbled, contemporary ink inscription to front blank, early library blind-stamp to first two leaves ('William Todd and Co. Library, Limerick'), light foxing to opening and closing leaves, unobtrusive light paper browning and occasional spots ans stains otherwise internally clean. The title page bears no date but the publisher's address and book's typography place it in the late 1850s to early 1860s. Very good early example of this American novel of the civil war era.

New York, Grove Press, 2022, trade paperback, 272 pp, Advance Uncorrected Proof (ARC), New. Straight, tight and clean with no wear or markings in bright, pictorial card covers, no dustjacket as issued. The pieces in this collection, written between 1956 and 1961 and including short fiction, a radio play, and a stunning early novel, offer startling insights into Cohens imagination and creative process. Cohen explores themes that would permeate his later work, from shame and unworthiness to sexual desire in all its sacred and profane dimensions to longing, whether for love, family, freedom, or transcendence. Description:
New York: Random House, 1959. Book. Illus. by Sam March (dust jacket design). Very Good. Hardcover. First Edition.. Small octavo. Humes's second novel, following 'The Underground City,' both of which led to his being considered by Esquire magazine as having the same promise as two obscure guys named Updike and Styron (whoever they are). Anyway, he met a guy named Leary who introduced him to a little substance known as LSD, and after seriously indulging his fondness for the hallucinogen he became a trifle paranoid and a bit delusional, which pretty much ended his writing career. Humes was co-founder (with Peter Matthiessen and George Plimpton) of The Paris Review. He died of prostate cancer in 1992. Black cloth w/gilt lettering, 184 pages. Mildly cocked, light general wear, in price-clipped dust jacket w/light rubbing, light edgewear, creases to fore-edges of both flaps..
