Bickers & Son. Good with No dust jacket as issued. 1884. First Edition. Hardcover. Hardback bound in brown quarter leather over brown cloth with gilt titles to front, 5 raised bands with gilt decoration & black leather label at spine, bevelled boards; rear hinge splitting & has been crudely repaired, cloth worn at corners, scattered fox-spotting to contents, front pastedown damp-marked, 3 names & 2 years (1890 and 1943) on 2nd blank endpaper otherwise no inked inscriptions. There is a pencilled marginal note on one page which could be erased - but we left it in as quite interesting. xii + 178 pages, 13 plates, index .

Very Good. pp178 In blue cloth with gilt spine lettering, floral end papers, attractively printed with decorative chapter headings and black and white illustrations. Very good, a couple of stains to the covers, browning to end papers, the pages are clean and crisp. Bookplate of James Durham and his wife Lady Agnes (Townsend) of Cromer Grange, Norfolk. Letter laid in dated March 1923 from Harold Pearson of Cowdray Park to James Durham discussing some documents in his possession concerning the Poyntz family at Cowdray. Very Good 1884

A first edition copy of this history of Cowdray House, which was one of England's great Tudor houses. The first edition of this scarce work in the publisher's original cloth binding, with a gilt crest to the front board. Illustrated with a frontispiece and twelve further plates. Collated, complete. Cowdray House in West Sussex was once one of England's great Tudor houses, architecturally comparable to many of that era's great palaces and country houses. It is now a ruin, due to a fire in 1793. Julia Anne Elizabeth Roundell (née Tollemache, daughter of Wilbraham Tollemache of Dorfold Hall, Cheshire), wrote this illustrated history of this intriguing house, including the so-called 'curse of Cowdray'.
