Although very rare, this book is in quite poor condition, top board is almost completely detached and the bottom board is only attached very delicately. Leather on spine and cover is worn and cracking, coming away in some places. There is also no readable title, author's name or publisher on the spine. The marbled cover, although a little faded, is intact, however on the back there is a large scuff mark. Inside, the book is relatively clean, bar some page tanning and foxing throughout.; 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall Poor 1883

Contents very fresh and unmarked, with some tanning to the endpapers: 2 or 3 pages have one or two small and isolated foxing spots. In the original binding of cerulean cloth, decorated in blind and titled in gilt, very bright, clean, and fresh, with only some slight puckering of the spine ends. A beautifully-kept copy.

Lightly toned throughout; a distinct tobacco scent. Heavy toning to spine and board margins. Very good. Something of a farce, in which a wealthy Chinese man tries to have himself killed to trigger a life insurance policy after being informed that he has lost his fortune, only to discover later that he has not lost everything. First translated into English in the US in 1879. Although this edition is made up from sheets printed in London with a title page dated 1881, it was actually published just before the London edition in October 1880, since Sampson Low had decided to save its own publication for the Christmas gift market in November. A rare, 19th-century edition of Jules Verne's "Tribulations of a Chinaman in China". The first edition was published in 1879 and is part of Verne's famous "Extraordinary Voyages". This book is similar in style to 'Around the World in Eighty Days' but is known to be more humorous than his best-known novel. This book discusses, in a satirical view, the British trading opium in China and is filled with illustrations depicting adventures, shipwrecks, and sea battles.

Wealthy Chinaman hears that his fortune is lost. Opts for honorable suicide by arranging for a friend to kill him. Learns that his fortune isn't lost after all. Tells friend thanks but there is no need to kill him. Friend replies that he has already arranged for some thug to do the deed and now can't contact him... This Verne title is also unusual in that all three early publishers of this tale, on both sides of the Atlantic, ultimately published it in the exact same cloth binding (showing several characters "afloat on their backs, propelled by the wind caught in minisails attached to toe-masts, controlled by waistband halyards" [T&M]).
