London: Fisher, Son & Co, 1839. 16th Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Half-leather over marbled boards with raised bands and six ornately decorated compartments down the spine. Rubbed and slightly edge-worn, nonetheless showing very well indeed: firm and square, strong joints, bright gilt lettering. Contents clean, tight and secure with no pen-marks and not from a library so no such stamps or labels, just mildly age-toned and an old former owner bookplate to the pastedown. Note: the book doesn't give any publication date, that said the preface is dated 1839. Size: 8vo (200mm x 130mm); collation: pp. 356. Thus a very good copy in very tidy and well preserved condition.

Publisher's brown cloth, somewhat puckered and stained; ownership signature of John Taylor Pratt, dated 1839, on front pastedown; half of front free endpaper torn out. Binding sound, text unmarked but heavily foxed. A solid reference copy. Ellis authored many books about the role of women in society, emphasizing their role as a stabilizing moral influence.

Engraved portrait, engraved extra title vignette and13 engraved plates [ only 12 called for in the "List of Plates" - the plate opposite p.325 "An Evening Hymn" is the additional]. 8vo (8 3/4 x 5 3/4 inches), 476-pages. Contemporary half burgundy calf over marbled boards. Spine gilt extra in 5 compartments with lettering piece, all edges marbled. Foxing to portrait and extra engeaved title. Contemporary signature on front fly, later bookplate also on front fly. Very good and most attractive on the shelf.

Philadelphia: E.L. Carey and A. Hart, 1839. First American edition. 2 vols. in one. 8vo. 199pp.; 212pp. Publishers embossed rose cloth with paper spine label. Cloth soiled, scattered foxing. A knick on spine. A good copy. A Quaker who became a Congregationalist, she wrote mostly on women's matters in society.

Through t and her other books Mrs. Ellis sought "solely to the cultivation of habits th I have confined my attention--to the minor morals of domestic life". Spine sunned, paper spine label chipped, some foxing to edges of leaves, still a bright copy.
