A signed original sketchbook by the Ludlow artist, Winifred Burlingham with nineteen works done from memory, sixteen in watercolor by Burlingham Winifred

Artworks: The sketchbook has sixteen watercolors and three pencil studies. They are untitled and undated. Fifteen watercolor landscapes are Shropshire views, principally in winter or spring. A watercolor self-portrait shows the artist at work in a recessed doorway in town, drawing from memory in a sketchbook balanced on drawn up knees. The landscapes, some done with dry brush technique, extend to page edges. Two landscapes are particularly fine. Watercolor no. 12, shows a winter view with trees beautifully rendered in the grey light. And watercolor no. 15 shows a bright spring sun with corolla rising over a ridge still enveloped in morning mist : in the foreground, the sun is reflected in a clay pit amidst a knot of Chinese face rocks. Of the three pencil studies, two show a horse, one view showing a horse on its side. The third pencil study shows a series of seven dinghies with rowers, with an onlooker turned away. Provenance: Winifred Burlingham was a regional artist who primarily worked in Shropshire, into East Wales, in watercolor, oils and scraperboard. [Shepherdson] She has printed her name in capital letters on the inside of the upper cover. Below, in cursive, she has written, "Ludlow Arts Society", of which, she was a founding member. She published a booklet of Ludlow views in 1973 ("Looking Around Ludlow"). Sketchbook: The Bloxworth model artist's sketchbook has 20 sheets of Bockingford 90lb paper and was made by Daler Board Co. Ltd, Wareham, Dorset. Nineteen artworks are on fourteen sheets, (10 works on five sheets + 9 watercolors done on one side of the paper). Six sheets are blank. Format: A spiral bound artist's sketchbook, the carrot color upper side made of flexible cardstock, the lower side made of plain heavyweight board. Size: 254 x 177.8 mm (10 x 7 inches). Condition: Sheets: clean and bright, colors fresh, tips with gentle bends / Artist Notes (in pencil): Inside Front Cover: two lines, including her printed signature / Rear Cover: one line regarding purchase / Covers: corner wear and top corner bends, some stains and soiling, lower side with slight foxing / Binding: solid and reliable, upper side with splits at two bottommost holes, slight loss to Hole 20.
