About This Item

London: Jonathan Cape, 1953. Book. Illus. by Bill Ryan;. Very Good. Hardcover. First Edition. 8vo. 249 pp. Black boards decorated in orange on the front panel and spine; orange upper edge; endpaper maps. Light wear on the corners of the dustjacket with some fading on the spine; price intact; no interior markings. Illustrated throughout with line drawings by Bill Ryan. Ryan spent two years in a Gold Coast port where her husband was involved in the timber trade. The growth of political consciousness was awakening in the locals and it altered, for good, the former subservience of Black to White. And it seemed that both races accepted the change without much difficulty, unlike most of the other places in Africa where the same changes were happening. Ryan gets right to the heart of the matter: how life in West Africa had changed for the Europeans. The Chapters are: Here It Is Again; Go Home Missus; All the Amenities Including Bagpipes; The Wood and the Trees; An Office by the Harbour; Excursions and Diversions; This Is West Africa; Up the Creeks; The Big city; and A House in Black Man's Town..
