Description:
Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1941. First Edition . Hardcover. Very Good-/Fair. First Edition, same date of 1941 on title and copyright pages, no additional printings; grey/beige cloth, vg- (cocked; top edge darkened; spine ends and corners bumped; boards soiled; discoloration to eps from dj) in a fair first-state dj. Apparently no copies better than about 'good' of this dj exist, due to its ill-advised design. This one has the window, with rippled edges, still attached to the black paper at the bottom and the left side towards the spine (with some tears). The top of the front panel is missing, and the front flap (with $2.00 price) is detached. Elsewhere there are many chips and tears, but the text (blurb by Louis Untermeyer) on the rear panel is intact; tears repaired on inside by non-acidic Filmoplast. 183 pp.

This multi-volume set is in very good condition. The front, back, and spine of the cover boards have minimal wear. The edges have little bumping. The previous owners name and motto is affixed to the inside of the front cover boards of both volumes. The pages are yellowing in both volumes and there are no marking on any pages of both books.
"This book contains all the stories I have written that are not included in East and West. The tales in that collection were of about the same length and written on the same scale and so it seemed convenient to publish them together in a single volume. Most of the stories which I have now gathered together are very much shorter. Some were written many years ago, Others more recently. They appeared in magazines and were afterwards issued in book form. To the first lot I gave the title of Cosmopolitan Magazine, and except for Ray Long, who was then its editor, would never have been written....: - Preface from The Complete Short Stories of W. This book is in good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, edges, and spine of the cover boards. There is some bumping and fraying on the cover boards. The previous owner has affixed a name label to the inside of the front cover board. The pages are yellowing and tanning, but the pages are clear of any markings."'Do you hear voices?' he asked. 'You think I am deaf?' 'Of course,' she said. 'I hear yours.' It was hard to keep on being civil. She was tired and he had been asking questions such a long time, days and days of incredibly naive questions. Now he was explaining that she misunderstood; he did not mean real voices. Fantastic. He was speaking, he said, of voices that were not real and yet they were voices he expected her to hear. He was something of a pest, this man, but she could think of no decent way to get rid of him. You could tell he meant well and so you tried to play the game with him, as if with a fanciful child...." - Chapter One from The Snake Pit

St. Ives: Being The Adventures of a French Prisoner in England (1897) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. Unable to write, Stevenson dictated thirty chapters of the novel to his stepdaughter as a diversion from his debilitating illness. He alternated dictating St. Ives and The Weir of Hermiston but gradually lost interest in the former. The plot concerns the adventures of the dashing Capitaine Jacques St. Ives, a Napoleonic soldier, after his capture by the British.
