About This Item
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1908. First American Edition 1st Printing. Cloth. Near Fine/Slipcased. Dudley Carpenter. First Printing--Illustrated by Dudley Carpenter. Signed by Hough directly on the front free endpaper--signature only. From the recently auctioned collection of M.B. Goldstone-- who, along with his brother Adrian Homer Goldstone--were Steinbeck's bibliographers. A superb copy housed in clamshell and slipcased--matching the reddish brown cloth boards--lettered in gilt and with the date "1908" in gilt at the bottom of the slipcase box. The true first printing and therefore scarce and collectible. Frontispiece with tissue guard, along with three more illustrations by Carpenter. Bright and clean decorated front board--some age toning to the rear board and dustiness to the page edges--still in remarkably fine condition. M.B. Goldstone and his brother Adrian Homer Goldstone, who was Steinbeck's bibliographer, collected hundreds of early 20th Century western fiction and detective fiction.
