London: Elkin Mathews and John Lane, 1894. Scottish artist Robert Weir Allan's copy of the first volume of the Yellow Book, inscribed in the month following publication. Publisher's yellow decorative boards, discoloured as usual but near very good condition. Allan has noted his ownership on the first free endpaper: 'Rob.t W. Allan May 1894' in pencil but made no further annotations to the text and illustrations which are complete as issued including the 16 page catalogue of adverts to the rear. Collates pp272; pp 16 adverts. The Yellow Book was the definitive journal of the 1890s. At the time of its first publication Robert W Allan, neither a 'Glasgow boy' nor an English impressionist, was living in Piccadilly at the heart of London's art world, in his early 40s and producing some of his most successful pieces. Clearly this was not a publication you could afford to ignore as an artist in London at that time. 1894
