The lynching of Cattle Kate (Ellen Watson) and Jim Averell by six politically powerful Wyoming cattlemen rocked the nation in July 1889. Newspapers proclaimed that Ellen Watson was a prostitute on horseback who bartered sex for calves, that Averell was her pimp, that both were rustlers, and that somehow they deserved to be hanged from a tree in Spring Creek Gulch of the Sweetwater Valley..
