About This Item
Boston; 1909-1912: Houghton Mifflin Co. Limited Edition. Octavo. In 16 volumes. The Autograph Edition limited to only 750 sets signed and numbered. The present set is not signed but does contain four manuscript pages within four volumes written on rectos only with corrections. Mrs. Ward's first book Robert Elsmere was a huge success. She had become so popular in England and America that several of her works were done in a limited edition. This is the first collected and only uniform edition of the author's novels. New introductions by the author were done especially for this set. Illustrated with photogravures. Frontispieces beautifully done in color, a few in brown and all others in black and white, all printed on Japan paper. Some of the illustrations are from original drawings by Albert Sterner, Charles E. Brock and Archibald S. Hartrick and with several portraits of Mrs. Ward not previously published. A handsome set bound by the Riverside Press in 3/4 brown morocco over marbled paper covered boards with matching endpapers, raised bands with compartments fully lettered and decorated in gilt, silk ribbon markers. Some light speckling to top edges, a few light scratches to a few volumes.
