About This Item

Cambridge: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1897. First Thus. Riverside Edition in seventeen octavo volumes (7 3/8 x 4 15/16 inches: 188 x 127 mm.). Contemporary three-quarter olive green, pebble-grain morocco over marbled boards, ruled in gilt. Spines with five raised bands, decoratively tooled and lettered in compartments, marbled endpapers, tope edge gilt. Frontispieces in all volumes and added engraved titles in all volumes of the Writings. Spine of Life and Letters (volume 17) very slightly faded, still a very Fine set.

Harriet Elisabeth Beecher Stowe (June 14, 1811 - July 1, 1896) was an American abolitionist and author. Her novel Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852) was a depiction of life for African Americans under slavery; it reached millions as a novel and play, and became influential in the United States and United Kingdom. It energized anti-slavery forces in the American North, while provoking widespread anger in the South. In addition to this, Beecher wrote more than twenty books, including novels, three travel memoirs, and collections of articles and letters. She was influential for both her writings and her public stands on social issues of the day. Here, her most significant works are drawn together in one set. Ideal for collectors of abolition or women's literature.

BAL 19508 and 19509.
