Hampstead, London: High Hill Press, 1987. A Fine unmarked copy with near Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. A large format book of 192 pages printed in the calligraphy of George Simpson with architectural photographs by Keith Wynn and portraits of many authors and newly commissioned photographs of the houses in which they lived. In this book are collected 101 comments on Hampstead and its inhabitants ranging from the lyricism of Keats and Leigh Hunt to the satire of Alan Coren; from fictional accounts by Dickens, Wilkie Collins and John Le Carre, to sharp analytical side-swipes by John Mortimer and Kingsley Amis. Nikolaus Pevsner and others note the architecture, Michael Foot and Hunter Davies descibe the Heath today. There are glimpses of Fanny Burney, Browning, Blake and R.L.S., Shaw and Wells feature so do Lytton Strachey, E.M. Forster, Virginia Woolf and other Bloomsburyites. Some previously unpublished writing is included, notably, passages from the autobiography of Sylvia Lynd who lived most of her life in Hampstead.
