Spine lettering piece missing. 19th century owner's bookplate on front endpaper: "William Howard Hartley House Devon". This edition has a 2 page "Preface to the Fifth Edition". "It is peculiar to Columbus and to me to make the old world acquainted with a new one." - from the author's dedication. "According to the nomenclature of the world without souls, enthusiasm in science is genius; in vice, it is spirit; in religion, it is madness." - page 72. In a 1948 catalogue, the book dealer Charles Heartman described this work as a "satire on America in the manner of Voltaires Candide". ; 16mo 6" - 7" tall .
