About This Item

New York: Criterion Books, 1961 WYSIWYG pricing--no added shipping charge for standard shipping within USA. Translated by John Russell. Full green cloth, gilt titles on spine, 404 pp, 24 ff b & w photo plates, line drawings, bibliography, index. Some edge wear. DJ edge-worn with a 1 cm tear to rear panel; in Brodart archival cover. The US edition omits four (of forty) chapters from the original French edition, which was published in 1955 under the title Triste Tropiques. From the DJ: "Here are intricate, detailed accounts of the Caduveo, and the elaborate painted designs behind which the hide their 'natural' faces . . . the rigid hierarchical society of the Bororo . . . the Nambikwara, who win a sort of security by giving wives to their chief . . . the disease and superstition-ridden Tupi-Kawahib, whose weird tribal dances sometimes last for days. ...Lévi-Strauss sets these tribes in a world context, and draws fascinating comparisons and parallels...." Books are offered subject to prior sale. You may return any book within 14 days for a refund; if it was not as described, we will also refund return shipping costs (but please e-mail us first). You can place credit card orders through Biblio, or we will ship upon receipt of payment by check or money order. Sales tax is collected by Biblio and remitted directly to your state, where applicable. SHIPPING IN UNITED STATES: Books are priced postpaid, so there are no additional shipping charges for standard shipping. We will ship via Priority Mail for $12.00 per order (Save on multiple-book orders!). This may be reduced if actual postage is less than for a medium flat-rate box.
