Collins, London, 1968. First Edition. Hardcover. Good/Good. Illustrator: Peter Carmichael -- Photographer. 1.3 kg; approximately 300 pages, of which 77 pages text, acknowledgements, introduction by authors. Photographic endpapers. Black-and-white illustrated title page, showing the Pacific Islands and their place in the world. The text illustrated with numerous colour and black-and-white photographs and black-and-white maps throughout the text. Covers are in a sepia toned tapa design with white titles to the backstrip.. rubbing to the book edges and to the book covers with some fading to the book edges. Browning to the text block edges and light age toning of the internal text.there is a gift inscription on the verso of the free front end paper. Illustrated dustwrapper, showing people being pulled along by a horse cart, with black writing on front panel and spine. The dustwrapper has some chipping on the corners and there is a tear on the front panel, on top edge, measuring .5". The dustwrapper has faded and there are some rubbing along the front of the edge, front spine gutter and back spine gutter. The spine is particularly affected by sun damage. Both front and panels have grubby marks and there are some grubby marks throughout the book. In 1968 the photographer, Peter Carmichael, spent months photographing the islands of Fiji, Tonga, Gilbert and Ellice, and captured the contrasts and tensions of life in these islands.
